Just bought an interesting gun. A Smith and Wesson 340PD in .38 Special (+P Jacketed only). Apparently it is part of a contract overrun for the European market.

It has all the same markings of the magnum version and is an AirLite Scandium, just .38 +P only.

I love it. Haven't shot it yet.

Anyone have any additional information about this gem?

How about some info on where you got it. Do they have any more? If I may be so bold, what price range was it?

Smith & Wesson used to make a xxxPD (forget the model #, sorry) but discontinued it last year. It was exactly the same as the 340PD EXCEPT that it was 38 +P only, not .357 MAG, and it measured 1/8th of an inch shorter overall than the 340PD.

I don't know why S&W discontinued it, probably due to lack of consumer interest, but places like Zander's Sporting Goods bought a bunch of them and were letting them go for a song.

Could this be what you have?.

We have a S&W 340 PD in .357 magnum in our store showcase; its NIB
with the hefty price of $629.88. Scandium is expensive, although very
little is used in firearms; as its mixed with an alloy for strength. I'd love
to have it, but can't afford that kind'a price for a fixed sighted snubby.

You may be referring to the 342PD. S&W evidently decided that it wasn't necessary to have two such similar revolvers when the 340PD could shoot .38 Spl along with .357 Magnum.

Elkslayer- I just e-mailed you.

Sorry for not responding sooner, was away from the computer all week.

I have a 342 and this isn't one of them.

Sir Aardvark- that sounds like it. It is a concealed hammer J-Frame, black frame and barrel with a grey cylinder. It is marked "AirLite Sc" on the right side of the frame. The right side of the barrel is marked ".38 S&W SPL. + P JACKETED". Inside the crane, the serial number is engraved and underneath it is: "340 PD".

One other cool feature- no integral gun lock on this baby.

It was marked $589 but I got it for $549.
