Didn't the 581 have fixed sights?
You won't find me disagreeing Bob!
I might have a preference for it's stainless steel brethren, but the sentiments the same.
Incredible, and on par with the others mentioned. I would not say better, but I do like the 586 more. The python, and 27, and the 686 all get hyped up to a point where they cannot possibly live up to the hype. The 586 is kinda flying under the radar with the same amount of awesome as the others. It is my opinion, unpopular as that may be, that the S&W Model 586 is the best double action to come down the pike yet. Prefer it over the vaunted Model 27 and the Colt Python.

I've had the 586, 28, and 19. While the 586 is tougher and more accurate (at least mine was), the quality of the machine work and bluing was not as good as the older guns. IMO, the stainless on the 686 kinda masks the imperfections evident in the blued L-frame.They did.
I had a 4" 681 that was a REAL sweet shooter. Like hit a fence post over 100yrds kinda shooter. Shoulda kept it.
Very timely post! I'm itching for a 586. I've had 2 686's over the years (a 6" and a 4") and I regret selling both of them.
Do all the new S&W revolvers have that lock on the side plate?
Thanks. The newer ones do, but there are plenty of pre-lock 586 and 686 around in all barrel lengths with the 2.5" 586 being the exception. They are really hard to find and if you do plan on paying over 1k for one.
I think its a matter of aesthetics more than anything. Some folks like lugs, some don't.How much weight can you possibly save as a half lug I have a 19 with a python barrel and it’s still way lighter and better balanced com pared to my 586
