The Smith factory warranty is good for the life of the pistol, not just the first or any subsequent owner.

If you have a smith that does not work exactly as you would like to, call customer servce and play stupid.

CS: What kind of pistol is it?

me: small and shiney, well kind of small, its bigger than my buddy's thought.

CS: What's wrong with it?

me: feels like it's sick. it won't work right, sometimes. sometimes it will.

CS: Is it an ammo issue?

me: what's that

CS: (with a sigh) we'll send you a shipping label and instructions

me: thank you

When you ship an auto to Smith, do not send a magazine with it. Most of the time, there will be a new factory magazine in it when returned to you. If they have a bad conscience about something, there may be more than one mag.

Model 669 is traditional DA/SA

Always buy the latest version, the 6904/6906. Get the later model with the rounded trigger guard. That will make it easier to fing holsters.

You simply will not live long enough to wear the gun out. I would be suprised is anyone short of Bill Gates could afford enough +P+ ammo to leave measurable wear on the piece.

would feed a red common house brick if you could get it in the magazine!

A BIG +1 on that:) Every 2nd or 3rd gen S&W pistol I have run across eats all the ammo loaded into their mags. I have been doing a little torture test on my S&W 910 (value line 5904) for the past few months. I'm 850 rounds through my 910 w/o cleaning it...and still ZERO problems!

My first Smith auto was a 469. Here's a little writeup I did on it - http://hiddendefense.blogspot.com/2009/01/smith-wesson-469-proven-ccw.html

I really liked it, but had traded it off on a whim. I then found a well used 908 to replace it and have never looked back. The double stacks do have a fairly fat grip that feels good in the hand, but don't conceal nearly as well as the single stacks. You'll notice a distinct difference in trigger pull because the second gens have a half cock notch that you feel as you pull through DA. The third gens don't have that notch. From my understanding S&W still support the third gen guns, but not the second gen ones. I have read of an instance where since they couldn't fix a particular second gen gun they offered a discount on one of their newer M&P's.

Anyone know where I can find just the grip extender? Used 15-round mags with the grip extender on GB seem to be going for about $40 each, whereas brand-new Mec-Gar 15-round mags without the grip extenders seem to run about $23 each...
Wow, Google is your friend:

The grip adapter can be purchased from http://www.precisiongunspecialties.com/ or by contacting the S&W store at 1-800-331-0852 and ordering part #242120000 (around $8 each).

I'm a big fan of Smith Third Generation Smiths in general and the 6906 in particular. Before retiring from le, I qualified umpteen times with the little Smith (and that was with agency crappy reloads) with nary a hiccup. As a "civilian", it gets carried a lot as one of my "go to" ccw pistols.

I have been looking around for a 3rd gen S&W to replace the 5906 that I foolishly sold a decade ago, and last Sunday I found a nice-looking 6906 for a decent price and snapped it up. Put a 100 rounds through it on Monday: wow, talk about rekindling the 3rd gen love. Smooth shooting, good reliability, excellent accuracy. I just got some spare 12-round mags in the mail from KY Imports (fast shipping, I ordered Monday, paid Tuesday and they were in the mailbox today), have a Hogue grip on the way and will shortly be replacing my recoil spring (seems like a good idea on a mid-90s gun) and mag springs with Wolffs. Now to find a holster!

AJ, I have no idea. Sorry.

I just called Classic Pistol and they said they still have the 669. He told me though that it was DAO. Is that true? Every thing I have read has said they are DA. Have I been mislead or is he mistaken???

669 DA or DAO???

Thanks.

Shawn
The 669 loks like a DAO in that there is no hammer to pull back to make it SA. Still, it is DA/SA - at least the one I looked at today was. I could get it for ~$350 with one mag. That a good deal?

The 669 is DA. It has a bobbed hammer, but it does have a hammer. You can cock it with the slide for SA. I would say that $350 is a good buy as long as it's in good condition. I was one local for $400.

I have a Smith & Wesson 6946 and love it. The 6946 is the DAO version of the 6906.
It seems to cycle any ammo that I load in the magazine, is accurate, and is a joy to shoot. Mine was a police-trade picked up at a local shop in like-new condition for like $256 a few years ago. If something happened to this one, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

I ended up pulling the trigger (figuratively...) on a used 3913 I found at calguns.net. Paid $500 but am getting 5 mags and a neat little portfolio to conceal it in. UPS can't drive fast enough right now... :cuss:

Quick question for the crew: any thoughts to carrying a 6906 with the safety off? I noticed that the DA pull is very long (so I'm not worried about an AD/ND from the trigger), but I also noticed that flicking the safety off also rotates the hammer block out of the way (so maybe dropping the gun would cause an AD/ND).

I also have a Glock 19 and a Taurus PT-709 that I carry -- just looking to simplify the manual of arms if possible, since there's no manual safety on the G19, and since the trigger on the PT-709 essentially functions like a Glock's, I'm comfortable carrying the PT-709 with the safety off.

OP: did you ever get that 669 from Classic Pistol? :D

I have carried S&W autos everyday both on duty and off for 32 yrs. My dept started issuing them in 1968 and we'd have between 1700 and 2200 guns on the street at any given time. Our training was to carry them with safety off and just use the safety lever for a decocker. Training was that if in a heavily crowded, hostile situation then consider putting the safety on in case of a gun grab.

My agency required us to carry the 6906 with the safety in the "off" position. The pistol can be dropped while in the off safe configuration with no fear of an ad.

I carry this little bugger every day.

Unless I'm in the mountains, and I have the 4566 on, or a Colt Trooper. This is my every-day gun. I changed out the floorplate on a couple of mags for less printing. Looks like this:

Bump back to the top -- anyone know if there's a floorplate for the 6906 that's a little flatter than the OEM curved one?

Maybe something like the OEM flat floorplate for a 3913?

Or the OEM curved (but less curved than the 6906) floorplate for a 3913?

I'm guessing the floorplate for the 5906 isn't an option...just looking for something a little more low profile for concealed carrying. Thanks!

When we were issued the 6904 I made several flat floor plates out of flat steel. Very simple to make using a sabre saw and grinder.
