I have an S&W 586 .357 magnum and wanted to install a new 4” barrel. Is proper installation procedure just to screw on the new barrel until the front sight looks like its standing up straight? Since there is apparently nothing locking the barrel into position, should I put some thread lock onto the barrel threads to insure that it can’t creep after its screwed in? Thanks!

A proper do-it-yourself project will require an action wrench, barrel vice, and a lathe, plus some knowledge, at the minimum.

The simplicity of unscrewing the old barrel fooled me into thinking that installing the new barrel would be very straight-forward. Thanks for clearing things up, I’ll take it to a gunsmith.
