So today i happen stop by the local gun store to see whats new and happen to see a lightly used s&w 5903 (alloy frame version of the s&w 5906) marked gwinett county(GA.) police with night sights and 3 mags asking price is $419. Is this a good deal or is it too high for a used police trade in

You say "lightly used." Does that mean it was in really good condition?
If so, let me ask you this- do you think you'll find a higher quality gun at anywhere near that cost?
Those were very very well made guns. Durable, strong, etc… Compare it to everything else out there.

Years ago, 3rd gen Smiths were cheap, as police departments had dumped them to go for polymer. These days, their values are rising, but even so, I would expect any other good quality used gun in that price range to be a modern polymer framed gun. Not that those are bad, mind you, but they just don't have the same fit/finish/workmanship as those 3rd gen Smiths.

I dont know if ill find them any cheaper here in know on gunbroker there going for at least $500 on the low end and up to $700. But your right the 3rd Gen smiths are beautiful reliable and accurate. The fit and finish on those pistols is top.

Fair deal. I saw one recently for $400 locally. They great guns, and they are only going to go up. If I wanted it, I wouldn't pass on it just because I might could save $50 somewhere else, because you might not be able to find the one that is $50 less

Tennjed i was thinking the same thing. Im really thinking about going to buy heck i already got 2 boxes of gold dots 124gr ready to go.

I think its a reasonable price. What is $50 nowadays in ammo? 2 boxes and a range fee?

Tuj your right about about ammo prices a box of federal 9mm fmj is about $24 in my area. I remember when it was $12 for a box of 50. Dont get me going on .45 and. 40s&w

I bought a 5906TSW for $400-something, I forget exactly, it was a few years ago. Buds was blowing out the regular 5906's for $300 I think.

Anyway, great gun. Mec-gar makes some 17 round mags for it.

I think the 3rd gen S&W's will go up in price. Tupperware will not.

Yeah, I got one of those Gwinnett County trades. The 3rd gen Smiths are some of the finest guns produced by a US manufacturer. Consider that a factory stainless mag can fetch upwards of $40 to $50 a piece, it is a good deal. The only downside with this particular police trade is that it says Gwinnett County on the gun.

Went in to put in on layaway and closer look the trijicon nite sights still glow made in 2010 and the barrel barely even looks like its been used. First decent check i get im buying it.

Price not high...

If you run a quick check on 3rd generation S&W pistols at gunbroker.com, you will notice that 400.00 is not high... not with 3 factory mags and night sights. Not sure why, but these guns are going for about what they went for new back in the day. I'm in the market for a 5906 with the step trigger guard (older model) and while they are out there, they ain't going for $300.00 to $350.00.

Something else to consider, you're not going to find mags for less than 30.00 a piece and if the night sights still have some glow... bonus.

Just my thoughts...

^^^ Because they are some of the best US made steel semi-autos in the marketplace. They used to call the 3rd Gen Smiths "poor-man's Sig (226)". Well, in recent years, used (German) Sig 226's have been going for $500 to $700.

Seriously, I buy 'em whenever I seen one in the low $300 range. These days, it is a rare thing.

The reverend u are right about the mags i did a check on gunbroker lowest priced mags were 28.99 for 15rd mecgar mags

Hey onward allusion i have heard that comparsion between the 3rd Gen pistols and sigs
And i think when it comes to reliability the smith is on par with the sig. Ill even go on a limb
And say the smith is more reliable than the beretta(because of the open slide and trigger return spring problems) remember the smith passed all the test in the military trials except the firing pin energy test and chrome barrel requirement.
