This is a very specific question, but I thought I'd send it out there to see if I could get feedback.

The sear retention pin on my 5906 has been tampered with at somepoint in its life, and I didn't know if I needed to breakdown the entire trigger assembly to replace it.

The pin appears to have been pounded in without much grace, is slightly bent, and I can see where some metal has been sheared away as it enters the opposite side of the frame. All that considered, the gun functions flawlessly...so I'm afraid to even bother with it...but I KNOW it's there and that's enough to keep me up at night.

Thoughts?

I found one at Midway, but you know how that goes...a $2 part with $15 shipping. I’d pay it if it was essential, but I don’t know how much stress is put on that particular pin.

The first question that I'd ask is "Is there damage to the frame itself or just the pin?"

If the answer is just the pin, heck, replace the thing and get some sleep if that is what it takes.

If the frame is damaged, then a further look is probably warranted before going forward.

Frame is fine, it’s just a jacked-up pin.

Do I need to take apart the whole trigger group to replace it? I’ve done it on other guns before and feel comfortable doing it, but it’s a royal pain in the ass that I’d rather avoid.

That's a lot of levers and springs , contact S&W they refurbish 3rd gen pistols and action jobs. Also there is a series 3rd gen disassembly and assembly videos You Tube and Armorist on Smith& Wesson forum can help.

If you are just going to replace the pin.

1) remove the pin the the grip and remove the grip, hammer spring and its cup.
2) you should be able to push the pin out to the right. You may have to swing the sideplate aside.

If you use a straightened paper clip, or other small diameter slave pin, to push the pin out, the sear should remain in place.

Install the new pin with the small diameter end so it fits in the fork of the sideplate.

I'd never taken a 3rd Gen Smith down.

I picked one up in a trade and took it down to the frame the next day. The videos on Youtube make it easy.

Thanks! I think I'll just pop the pin out myself. I called S&W, and they sent me a free shipping label, but if I don't need to fool around with the trigger group, I'll just punch it out myself.
