Hi,

Wondering if any of you guys have owned both the S&W 649 and the Ruger SP101 in the snub nosed version?

If so, is one better than the other for pocket carry - I'm just talking about size, don't worry about weight. I know what they weigh.

I just want really want to know if the 649 is more concealable. It is a little shorter but I'm interested in the width comparison.

Thanks,

Mike

I can't comment on the 649 but I've packed my 2" bobbed SP101 in a pocket holster before. Weight wasn't too bad if I was wearing a sturdy belt meant for concealed carry. Size, though, was another issue; the handle was visible with about half of the pants in my closet, and it looked like I was carrying a large, stiff wallet. The factory grips were a little fat, and from what I heard there really aren't any smaller rubber grips around. I think Eagle makes slimmer grips in wood, but I never bought one since my rubber grips helped with recoil.

I think it was a Glaco holster. Cargo pants and levi's were okay, but my other pants didn't work. I'm only a medium sized guy, about 5'9 and 160, but if you're larger then it shouldn't be a big deal.

I own both.
The 649, loaded with Remington or Buffalo Bore .38 Special+P LSWCHP gets the nod for greater convenience.
The SP101, loaded always and only with Buffalo Bore .357 158gr JHC, is of course heavier and a little fatter, not to mention has significantly greater recoil and slower follow-up shots, but obviously has greater penetration.
Both are easily carryable in hip OWB or appendix IWB modes for me.

I own two SP101s ( 2 and 3 inch barrel ) and a couple of S&W model 49's in .38 Special ( one blue and the other nickel ).

I'd say if you intend to shoot plenty of magnum loads go with the Ruger. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with either choice. The Bodyguard is a classic small snub in all regards, and the Ruger is a compact, yet versatile. "6 of one...half-a-dozen of the other" in my humble opinion.

- regards
