what is the value of on in box but fired and are they capable of handling full 357 loads ?
anything to watch out for ?
I asked because a guy is offering me one in trade

Yes. It’s a .357 Magnum. Just be realistic with the use of Magnums particularly the 125 GR bullets.

Your car may do 130 mph. But if that’s the only way you drive it, it’s not gonna last as long.

Very subjective on pricing depending on condition. $375-$650 or so.

Good average lightly used? I’d be in for $500 if I wanted one. Again, really subjective.

My 66 no dash was manufactured in '72, purchased unfired in '74, and carried every working day for several years. Trained with it, qualified with it, and shot it recreationally, a lot. Most all the thousands of rounds was factory magnum ammunition or equivalent reloads. After several years of this, I was finally able to wear it out. I had it completely overhauled by S&W back around 1980. So even though I was able to wear mine out through dedicated effort, I still consider the 66s to be excellent revolvers.

Still have my old gun. After it's overhaul, it lead a much less strenuous life in the '80s, as I began transitioning to semi-autos on and off duty. Still in excellent overhauled condition today, and is shot occasionally with magnum ammo.

Neglected to mention that I'm not up on current values on these old guns.

If its one of the earliest ones, it will have stainless rear sights. The S&W Catalog says they are worth $100 more, but of course that's depending on the buyer. A collector may give more, but a shooter wont as they create glare in the sunlight. I'd say in this area, real nice in the box with nice Original Target Grips would be worth $650-700 depending on the sights. I have a no dash that is real nice with beautiful Target Grips and the Stainless Sights but no box. I sold it once for $675 and got it back in a trade. I believe it would still fetch $675 even though the market is soft. Don't see many with the stainless sights.

No I passed I just was not sure as it has been a range gun and being 30 plus years old I did not know enough about it with out a smith eyeballing it for me as I don’t know enough about revolvers to look for flame cut , wears / cracks and so on it looked to be well used so I passed

Not hard to judge them.
I first look at the barrel face. Easy to see/judge throat erosion and flame cutting of top strap.
Secondly, I look at cylinder end shake. Foward and rear end shake.
Third, exterior finish and grips.

Remember, factory can’t overhaul them anymore. Designs have been made to new ones and old parts aren’t available at factory anymore.

Yup, the flame cutting and if the barrel has seen lots of magnum loads through it are signs. Numrich last I looked has a decent amount of small parts for the various S&W revolvers if there needs to be some parts replacements. Only goes so far if the revolver has had lots of rounds downrange. Still enough nice samples out there if being persistent in finding one or more. ;)
