Hey everyone. Earlier I posted a thread looking for a set of grips for a NIB 686-6 plus. Before I make a final decision, I think I will need grips to fit a round butt, but wanted to make certain that this model is indeed a round butt and not square.

Stupid question perhaps, but I'd rather not buy something online that does not fit. Just want to make sure, especially if I order some nice Ahrends wood grips eventually.

In the mean time, I really like the Presentation grips from Pachmayr, with no finger grooves: http://www.lymanproducts.com/pachmayr/revolver.htm#Presentation. However, they only make them for a SB, can these be used on a RB gun?

Thank you again for helping me out with this! :)

Okay, I took off the grip and I am officially a retard :banghead:. Clearly a RB, and my airhead moment for the day. The 686 came with the Hogue soft monogrip that includes an adapter at the bottom of the butt that the grip screw goes in. Obviously, I'd remove this if going with a non Hogue monogrip.

So being a RB, I should be able to go either SB or RB, right? Are there any adapter kits needed for the Pachmayr presentation grips (or any other SB type) to work right?

Thank you all for your patience, I am still learning!

Square butt grips will fit, but there will be a gap at the back. If you like the external size of the square butt grips, most companies sell a "conversion" grip. Inletted for a round butt, with external dimensions of a square butt. No unsightly gap.

Joe

Thanks Joe for pointing that out about the gap. Their is no conversion for the Presentation grips I liked, so I decided on the Pachmayr Compacts instead, which I'll slap on my 686 until I find a good set of wood grips, maybe some from ahrends. I think I'll really like the Compacts for the fact that the back strap is completely covered. This ought to give the palm of my strong hand plenty of support that would be lacking with an exposed backstrap, as I grip the gun strong hand high on the grip, just low enough to avoid gettin' hammer bite.

Thanks for giving a NOOB a good edumacation!
