I was just looking at a friends new factory recoil spring for his s&w 6906. He got a police trade in and ordered a new spring as he had no idea how many rounds the spring had. Anyway the new spring is ~3/4 inch longer than old one. He called midway to make sure he had right part # and they said it was. Is this normal for the new spring to be longer and then compress over time?

Yes it is quite common for a spring to "take a set", this is factored into the design.

Main issue to check is to mark the frame and slide at maximum retraction with the old spring, then after replacing the spring make sure the slide still goes all the way back to the mark.

If the spring is somehow incorrect, the major danger is ihat the coils all touch and stop the side from having its full motion which can damage the frame.

All you need to do is count the coils, if the same as the old one you've got the right spring provided the wire size and diameter are also the same. You don't need to worry about the spring bottoming out if indeed number of coils and wire size match. As you might have guessed the compressed spring height will be the number of coils X wire diameter.

P.S. I concur with your friend and wally, if you take a careful measurement, install it and rack the slide a few times and remeasure it you may find it takes a bit of a set right away.
