I recently bought a nice SS S&W J Frame. The revolver has a little endshake, not too, bad and I have ordered shims from Midway to address that.

After my last range session with the gun, I was cleaning the cylinder with a rod and brush and on the backward pull, the cylinder jumped the frame stud. It does not do this when ejecting spent cases.

1. Is there an easy fix for this?

2. I have been told the frame stud is screwed into the frame and can be replaced if the condition worsens, is this a true statement?

Depending on the age of the gun?

Older ones were pressed in from inside the frame, and S&W can replace them.

Newer ones are part of the frame forging, and cannot be replaced.

In any case, it is not a DIY job.

In the future when cleaning the chambers of any revolver, hold the cylinder, not the gun.

A tight bore brush puts way more force on an open cylinder then anything you could do normally while ejecting cases.

Mine is a first year production (1985) Model 649 and it looks like it could be a separate piece.

Best send it to S&W for Warrenty repair then.

Like I said, it ain't no DIY project.

They can properly fix the end-shake while they are at it too.
And they won't use shims.
