S&W J Frame rd butt grip?

Could anyone steer me in the direction of some decent wood grips for a S&W J frame model 40 snubby? It is also called a Lemon squeezer. Thanks

These aren't the replacement stock for a model 40 but would work. The original model 40 stocks are smooth - not checkered.

I have only seen one aftermarket maker for a Model 40 in recent times, and at the moment, I can't recall who it is. Because of the safety integral to the grip frame, standard J grips do not fit them. I believe back "in the day" Ajax made some for them, or of course the original smooth wood ones S&W fit them with. You will need to do some hunting, most likely, on Ebay and the like.

Other options are to call S&W and have them send you a pair, or ask them who makes theres (it may be Altamont - see if they offer them).

The Boot grips and Combat grips from Badger Custom are flush with the backstrap so they won't interfere with the grip safety. I like the grips a lot and feel they aid in controlling the felt recoil even when firing full power Magnum rounds in my M640.

The 640 isn't a "Lemon Squeezer" - and I don't believe will take the same grips. The issue is not covering the backstrap, it's the internal safety mechanisms the normal grips will interfere with inside the grip frame.

But it's moot if those don't work on an M 40 as Oro pointed out. I do believe he knows whereof he speaks.

When in doubt contact the manufacturer of the grips, the revolver or both. Sorry if I pointed you in the wrong direction.

I have owned both original top-break Safety Hammerless revolvers (1887-1941) and the later hand-ejector model 40. Both were nicknamed "Lemon Squeezer" by users, but the term was, and to a degree still is, detested at the Smith & Wesson factory and by some collectors.

The grip safety system used in the model 40 and 42 was copied directly from the earlier Safety Hammerless, and all of these revolvers had plain slab stocks that wouldn't interfere with the internals. However the Safety Hammerless had a leaf mainspring, so the location of the stock screw could be critical. But this point is mood because we are not discussing the top-break gun.

Asking the stock maker would probably be the best course, but I believe that any J-frame stocks that fully expose the backstrap will work, although the horn at the top will be shorter then the ones used on earlier production model 40 and 42 revolvers.

I've been researching this lately also. I'm hung between the 'lamo camo' Hogue and the S&W for my S&W 442. I'm a laminate wood junkie so these two really caught my eye. Anybody on here happen to have a S&W 442 with aftermarket grips (I have seen several 642 style but no 442). I really like the Hogue colors (they match my 10/22 stock) but the wait would drive me insane!
