I ordered two of these and returned both, the mag. follower is not fully captured by the mag. body.

The new magazine is on the top of each image, the original to the pistol are on the bottom.
I have had two like this from different vendors.

They certainly look like they are made by different manufacturers. The style of font for the numbers is different.

But the big question is do the newer style magazines perform better, worse, or the same? Do the new magazines cause any problems?

I’m not sure that the high follower would cause any issues. If anything, the high follower might be more reliable with activating the last round hold open lever.

The magazine body stampings are different, with the vertical crimp continuous on the original mag, but interrupted at the transition on the new mag. The finish looks rougher, and it may be a lighting artifact but the point of release (feed lips length) appears shorter in the new mag. But as has been said, proof is in performance.

Where they in S&W packaging?
Yes.

I did not try them out. I did insert the mag. in the firearm with the slide forward and it was difficult to pull the slide back and lock it. The original 13 rnd mag. works very well.
With very little effort I can rotate the nose of the follower out of the magazine body exposing the bottom of the forward part of the follower.

That certainly confirms a problem. Have you tried swapping the magazine springs and followers to try to determine if it's a follower design problem, a magazine shell problem, or both?

S&W packaging . . . . I'd test fire them, they are probably an improved version

I did not, the mags were sent back or returned ASAP. Do to Measure 114 in Oregon this is a time sensitive affair.
I contacted S&W's CS regarding this issue which was a waist of time.

I could easily apply a little upward force to the nose of the follower and it would come out of the mag. well? Does that seem right?
