It feels like the "best thing since sliced bread" in CCW revolver category. I'm thinking of nixing my tiny five shot 37-2 to get one. Any thoughts?

You've discovered the best kept secret of CCW. A 2" m12 in a pancake at 4:00 will go all day without being "a drag"

My first plain clothes issued weapon in the US Army was a 2" M10 S&W in a nasty sholder holster of ill repute! When I got assigned near the end of my enlisted Regular Army career to Arlington Hall and managed to con the Arms room sgt. to have mercy on me , for some booze, and issue me an M-12 with a new Bucheimer shoulder rig. :D At least I could ACT like the spooks on my e-7 pay ! While I never pulled it in the line of duty or otherwise it worked very well on a mid 20s athletically built suit and tie guy!:)

Here's one I bobbed hammer, removed serrations from trigger and slicked up the double action trigger.
I find it much easier to shoot (accurately and rapidly) than my "J" frames.

They are very nice guns. Despite what many will tell you (including S&W) they can and will fire +P fine.

I have been looking for the right one at the right price for a very long time. Everytime I find a Model 12 it is either a 4" barrel or square butt. I dont want to butcher anything so I am holding out for a RB 2" nickel for less than GB prices.

The honest truth is that these guns are no better than Colt Cobras. Some would say worse and some would say better. They are just another option especially if you are loyal to S&W.

I will use simple test to decide. If it fits in my current high quality leather holster I will buy it if it doesn't I will pass. It did pass the test and I have bought it only good lord knows why. With slightly larger size and weight it will be easier to shoot then 37-2 I used to own. Although not needed the sixth shot does not detract from this piece.

Inspect any used airweight carefully before purchase. Open the cylinder and look at the frame just under the barrel (where it's thinnest). Over the last two years I've seen 3 (a Model 38 Bodyguard, a Model 37 and a Model 12) with cracked frames!

IIRC, this was traced to over torquing the barrel on installation. But whatever the reason, there is no warranty for this, because those frames are no longer made/in-stock and the guns in question were made before 1980 and pre-date the excellent warranty that S&W has now.

You may well continue to look for a still longer time. Model 12s have become something of a collector's item now, with prices to match. A RB 2" nickel will be a hard find, but it would make a very nice carry piece.

My Model 12 was a rescue project basket case when I bought it. A suicide gun, it was cleaned but the grips were not removed and blood ate a large divot in the frame where the blood had pooled under the grips.

Today it looks like this...duracoat in flat earth took care of the finish and the divot was patched. I even located a set of new Pachmayrs for the skinny frame. It is a favorite BUG carried crossdraw or in a pocket with a set of boot grips.

My Grail gun is a 3" Model 12 with a round grip.

My main carry peice as of late has been my newly acquired S&W 12-3 roundbutt snub. I filled the gap in a set of Houge Bantam grips with some craft foam, so they fit nice with no gaps. Great trigger and an extra round, my 2 J frames are getting jealous!
