S & W Model 25 in 45 Colt

M25dash2.jpg
I have two S&W revolvers chambered for 45 Colt. The first one is my Model 25-2 which has both 45 ACP and 45 Colt cylinders. According to Roy it shipped from S&W in June 1978 with a single 45ACP cylinder to a gun shop in Texarkana. I bought it new around 1985 from that dealer, he had maybe two others all with both cylinders.

Oh, you Philistines with .45 Colt Mountain Guns! I'm pretty green about that.
Stumbled on to a 25-15 in my local shop; old timey 6.5" barrel, 4 screws, and Hilary lock. But really pretty nice bluing, and removable front sight. Changed mine to a fiber optic, and fit a shorter rear sight; couldn't quite get a zero with the original one.
The handsome Altamont factory grips were pretty, but thin up by the humpback; finally tracked some cokebottle Eagles instead.
Been loading .45 Colts for SAA replicas and Mirochester lever guns, so it's nice to have a double action .45 Colt.
We won't talk about my traded away M25 target in .45 ACP. :(

Did someone mention .45 Colt Mountain Guns? Here is a nice 625-7.

And here are a trio of 25-9's in .45 Colt: a 4", a 5", and a 6". I like them all. I have all of the original stocks for each revolver, but prefer to shoot with Kim Ahrend's stocks. I sure wish he was still in business.

Ah, DR505, you are a sinner! Wow, nice assortment; when did Smith stop making the Mountain Guns?
Cornhusker77, that looks a lot like the one I (regrettably) traded away. (If I get ambitious, I check for a serial number in my records) Where did you acquire yours? Glad this one has a good home.

Well my wallet doesn’t need to see this but it’s good to know there are some interesting revolvers out there. I’ve been in a stainless kick lately but those blue and wood ones are beautiful.

Just received mine back from TK Customs. They machined the cylinder so that it'll accept, with moon clips, .45 ACP. The fit and finish are superb. I reckon that now I have the best of both worlds with this pistol and, to be quite frank, I could not justify spending the bucks for a Model 25 chambered in .45 ACP. So, a range report will come later in the week. Needless to say, I'm chuffed. TK Model 25.jpg

I have an S&W Governor that will shoot 45 Colt, 45acp, and 410. The 45 acp's use moon clips.

Funny thing is, the gun is most accurate shooting the 45acp, which always amazes me, as its got the longest "jump" in the cylinder. The 45 Colt shoots well too, but not near as well as the acp.

When the M25 was first marketed, standard chambering was the .45 Auto, but they could be ordered chambered for .45 Colt. The .45C cylinder was longer, but the M25-3 and M25-4 have a cylinder the same length as the ones used for the .45 Auto versions and are called "short cylinder" .45 Colts. After the M25-5 was released, it had the same longer cylinder that earlier special order .45C guns did. From the M25-5 on, the series numbers alternate; M25-5 is .45 Colt, M25-6 is .45 Auto; odd series numbers from then on are .45 Colt, even series numbers are .45 Auto.

I would love to have one of those 125th Anniversary guns, and yes, all of them are chambered in .45 Colt, and all had a 6-1/2" barrel.

As usual, S&W always throws a wrench in determining information about a revolver with its model number. @bangswitch did a good job explaining the idiosyncrasies of the Model 25 series.

Here is my family of Model 25-5 revolvers.

I also have a 25-15 (6-1/2" barrel 45 Colt), a 25-2 (6-1/2" barrel 45 ACP), and a 625-8 (4" barrel 45 ACP).

I have a 45 Colt Redhawk and if Colt reintroduces a 45 Colt Anaconda, I'm all in.

my 25-5 is pretty old, and I bought it NIB. My local gunsmith did some work on it for me years ago. He converted it to round butt, applied a hard chrome finish, and made me a conversion cylinder for shooting .45 ACP. It has won a lot of pin shoots for me, and is a dandy hog hunting revolver with my .45 Colt loads.

Is stainless and rubber allowed in this thread ? 625-5 in .45 Colt that was worked on by Jim Stroh . No high polished bluing or fancy wood grips but it shoots great . Chamber throats are right at .452 . Love the 5” barrel. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

NO. OUT, NOW. Kidding. I’m just glad to know they exist. I didn’t know there were DA 45 Colt revolvers.

That top gun pic there is my dreamiest of dream guns right there!!

I have a S&W 625 Mountain Gun. I guess it isn't really another available DA .45LC, as the 625 is simply the stainless version of the M25 (I'm going back to the OP here).

Anyway, I would love to have an M25 eventually. I love shooting .45LC, I love N-frames, and I love blued guns. If I could find one from the 1950s to mid-1970s especially, old S&W blueing is gorgeous. Still, I need to replace my M57 I never should have let go, and I'll need to get an N-frame or two in (the much cheaper to shoot) .357mag before I buy a 2nd N-frame in .45LC.

If we are talking all time, Taurus had the 450. The Titanium version is quite awesome. Plus a version of the Raging Bull was chambered in 45 Colt but is very uncommon. Colt New Service and Dan Wesson as you mention as well as the Colt Anaconda.

Smith 25, Ruger Redhawk, and the Charter mentioned above.

Also the rare Colt 1878, rare first and second models of Smith Triple Lock Hand Ejector.

Every person that fires my Taurus 450 at the range is surprised at how light it is, how accurate it is, and the very little felt recoil.

I am getting concerned about telling people how great the gun is, since some of the titanium versions are being bid over $800 on Gunbroker.

What model revolver is that?

It took me two decades to stumble across this 25-5 Mountain Gun. It’s my “grail” gun. It’s my wilderness rambling, and range plinking, and pig hunting companion.

I’ve got several molds for it from 190-310gr but the Lee 255gr RFN accounts for 98% of what I shoot. A 200gr RFN, 200gr H&G68 style SWC, and the RCBS 270gr SAA SWC account for rest.
I’ll be running off another pot of 255’s soon, as I snagged 2,000 RUAG LPP primers. The lanyard is because I hunt river bottoms from a boat, and I’d hate to leave it on a ridge somewhere in Utah, Wyoming, or Colorado like I did the stinking Cell phone!
I dremeled the finger groove off to make it fit ME…

I once had a 5” .45Colt Ruger RedHawk. Crew served handgun! Hunted ONE day with it in a hip holster. Weighs WAY too much for all day wear.
Not seen are the two speed loaders with 255gr RFN @ 900fps…
