I have a friend who is interested in selling a S&W model 27 with a 3.5" barrel in blued finish. He claims the gun is in really good shape and wants $575 for it, which, if in good condition seems reasonable. The thing that has me a bit puzzled is that he says the serial number is S2488XX and I'm wondering if it is really 52488XX. He does say that the barrel is pinned. Any idea what date range this might place this gun in. I wouldn't mind having a 27 and the 3.5" barrel sounds interesting. Thanks.

S-2488xx would be a 1964-65 Model 27-2.
52488xx would not be possible as they went from S serial number prefixs to N in 1969, then to AAA, AAB, AAC, etc. in the 80's.

Well I eventually did decide to grab this revolver. It definitely is one of the early ones and appears to have the correct grips (or at least the right vintage). It looks to have been kept in a drawer for a good portion of its life and perhaps not overly well cared for during the latter as there was a bit of surface rust in some areas; however, most of this cleaned off nicely when I got it home. I have always wanted a 27 and this one has just enough wear to give it some character and a lot of life left in it as a shooter. I'll try to post a couple pictures.

Good deal on a nice old gun. That should date to about 1965. The grips survived very nicely if the bluing did not. I have a 1970 vintage one and it's one of my very favorite guns. I am a big fan of the 3" and 3.5" N-frames - lots of power in a very handy package.
