I just ran across a model 28-2 six inch version at my local gun/pawn shop today. Mechanically it is in excellent condition, clean barrel, locks up well, passes all the test for a revolver. The downside is it's been carried a lot. Finish is intact but you can see where there is a very faint touch of very light pitting in one spot. Replacement rubber grips, no original grips. I would classify it as good condition on its best day.

Sticker was $399, was offered it for $375 OTD. I don't have an N frame in my collection, strongly considering this critter. Fair price?

I think $375 OTD is a very good price, although its a little hard to judge condition with out a pic.. I'd say that was a good/fair price even for a well worn model 28. There is nothing else that you can buy for $375 that is even comparable.

You won't find a deal like that again for a long long time.

I sold one recently with 20 years of holster wear from riding around the ranch in my pickup for $575.

There are fancier S&Ws, but there ain't any that are better than the Model 28

I decided to buy the old girl during my lunch hour I put her in layaway. Here is a picture I took with my cell phone, sorry for the quality. Thanks for the information, it is greatly appreciated.

Looks about as worn as mine is. I love mine, it's a great shooter. Any ageny stampings on it?? Mine says "S.F.P.D." Some departments issued these guns back in the day.

Any decent condition N-frame for $375 is a good deal, in my books. I believe I paid $450 for my near NIB S-prefix 28-2, with box and manual.

$375 out the door is a good price for the gun. Not a crazy steal for me, but definitely worth paying. I paid about $445 total after shipping and transfer for one in a little better shape with original grips, off an online auction not too long ago, so you made out pretty well.

As others have already posted $375 OTD is a very good price for any sort of N frame these days. The original finish looks okay and getting it refinished is certainly not going to hurt its value any. The Model 28 with its factory matte blue finish was pretty much considered to be a working kind of gun, more along the lines of a police service revolver. Not as fancy as some of its other N frame brethren, like the Model 27, but a very durable and reliable .357 revolver that would give you many years of dependable service. Hope it's as good of a shooter as the deal that you got on it.

$375 OTD for a good condition, working n-frame around here will be seen right about when gold is back to $100 per ounce.

I think I paid $400 for my 4 inch. It has a bunch of holster wear too. It also has one of the finest, smoothest actions I have felt. The trigger is simply awesome. Have had thoughts of sending it back to Smith for a re-blue. Just looked at mine again. It has the red ramp front sight and a white outline rear sight. According to the serial number it was born about 1974 to 1977, probably a bit closer to 74. If I read the book correctly the white outline rear and red ramp front were on models with serial numbers starting with N546 and were made for the NY State Police. They should have NYSP stamped under the cylinder on the left side. Mine does not. Hmmmmm maybe I should letter this one.

I paid about that for a real used one a couple of years back. It had been refinished once and needs it again. It is a shooter and I thought that for the price is was a deal. I plan to get it re-re-finished one day here. Also have a standing offer to buy it back from the guy I got it from.
