I have a S&W Model 28-2 ,6" barrel Highway Patrolman. I would like to have it reblued in a gloss blue instead of the matte blue it has currently. Would anyone be able to give me a ballpark figure of what to expect as far as cost is concerned for the reblue, not just a cold blue job, but a good chemical salt bluing?
Thanks in advance.

First ask around if anyone is still doing bluing in your area. The various safety and pollution laws have driven all but a few rebluers out of business in this area. If there is nothing local, you may have to send the gun to someone like Cylinder and Slide or S&W to have the job done.

If you can find someone local, the cost can be reduced a lot if you disassemble the gun yourself. Make sure whoever does the polishing knows to polish the crane and sideplate on the frame; polishing them apart from the frame makes a terrible looking blue job.

Thanks, By a web search I've found a couple of gunsmiths in Indiana, I'll just have to call them and see what they say. Thanks for the tip on the sideplate, I'll make sure I mention that if I find someone.

Agreed, we see quite a bit of this on S&Ws that come in from time to time. Repairing that kind of damage is rather expensive, and quite time consuming, I might add.
