S & W Model 41 Ammo?

Shot my S & W 41 the other day for the first time and it did not like what I was feeding it. Several Failures to Eject and FTFs, usually at the same time.

Does anyone know what ammo the 41 prefers?

They preferred .22 LR Super-X or Remington standard velocity Match ammo back in the day when I got mine in 1968.

I would imagine they might still today.

However, a new gun might need a few box's of CCI Mini-Mag through it until the spring takes a set and the slide wears in.

If it is a used gun, and you do not know if it's been sitting for a period of time or what kind of ammo the previous owner used, it could be the recoil spring. Wolf sells a kit containing three springs. The drill is to try each spring with the ammo you intend to use (CCI Standard Velocity for me) and select the spring that works the best in your gun.

I have had excellent luck with CCI standard velocity. Mine will screw up every time with Remington standard velocity and occasionally with Eley.

Mine didnt like to be clean. Worked fine after 200 rounds or so. Sent it back to S&W, same problem. Sold it back in the early 80s.

My 41 worked great with CCI Standard Velocity from day one. A friend has one, though, that needed a few hundred rounds of CCI Mini Mags to break it in.
Clean it, oil it, and shoot a few boxes of Mini Mags. (If you can find any)

Mine like any ammo I feed them. It's more accurate with some then others but that's normal.

.22's can be VERY picky over ammo, some eat it all, others...
try a couple of different brands, I have one that likes the really cheap bulk box ammo (does great most of the time, but it's sure not match ammo = flyers)

i did change the spring to a lighter one to fix the occasional stovepipe.

This 22s vary. manufacturing tolerances vary enough from gun to gun you might have concetutive serial # guns that don't like the saame ammo.

CCI SV is the bullseye go-to ammo for a M41. If it's not hot enough, try SK Pistol match special.

I'm another shooter who recommends CCI standard velocity ammunition for the Model 41-at least for my Model 41. I've competed with my Model 41 over the past several decades in Bullseye matches and have tried about every make/type of .22 sv ammunition before settling on CCI. It functions the most reliably and is the most accurate in my Model 41.
Every serious shooter should try different manufacturers and types in their particular pistol before making a final decision. I'm sure that there will be some Model 41s that will perform better with something other than CCI-but, my guess is, not very many.

I think the new one of mine from 2007 said CCI Green Tag was what they at the factory were shooting out of it. I have shot the less spendy CCI standard just fine. (Along with Dicks sporting goods Federal Champion #714 that is not made any more) and all of the Ely has shot well out of it, but there have been several other brands that were not so good in it.

My other older (and more refined) M41 is not as picky as the newer one coming out of Houlton,Maine, and shoots virtually all ammo out of it. However Remington ammo is plain crap and not worth the cardboard box it comes in.

Now I'm in Maine I might have to go see them in Houlton and see the shop this summer.

I tried several in mine. Usually fed, etc ok but had a lot of failure to fire. Accuracy was not what I expected either.

ALL problems were cured when I went to CCI standard velocity. Never looked back.

From a long time ago

CCI was the most consistent.

Remington SV had more sqibbs than any other brand tried. Low hit on the paper and a failure to eject/feed the next round. Some of the Eley was just as bad.

There could have been more accurate ammunition available to select bulk buyers, but CCI was the most dependable for us of the unwashed masses.

Dunno if thats still true, or not.

S&W Test shoots and targets the Model 41 with CCI Green Tag, at least that is what the phone rep told me.

With .22s so hard to get right now, you might try some CCI Blazer which can be made by CCI or federal. It is decent tuff and shows up on the shelves frequently.

I use CCI SV or Green Tag depending on what I can find. My 2 will feed federal automatch but it is not that accurate in either gun. I finally just gave up and bought CCI exclusively.

I have shot the Federal Automag as well as the CCI and Winchester AR .22 ammo. I agree the stuff isn't well suited to pistols and is very accurate in rifles.

I have a 41 from the 60's that used to shoot everything under the sun, but for the last few years there have been lots of extraction problems. I'll order the calibration kit and lett y'all know how it goes. Glad I saw this thread
