I have a .22 cal Model 617 Smith and Wesson in stainless. 6" bbl.

The cylinder hangs if I use any hot ammo (hyper velocity), i.e. Stingers.

It seems that the cartridge case backs out of the cylinder and presses against the rear face of the frame upn firing and creates excess friction, not permitting a follow up shot.

I have to constantly unload the offending cartridge after each shot.

Is there any known cure, or am I resigned to using standard velocity ammo ?

Any help is appreciated.

Stingers use a nonstandard case length as you know and that may somehow be causing this problem, though exactly how is a mystery to me.

The choice is hardly between Stingers or standard velocity ammo.

There are plenty of High Velocity loads out there.

My two 617's get a steady diet of Winchester Powerpoints and it is not only accurate but the guns run perfectly.

I shot stingers in my 617 with no problem. Do you oil the chambers? I kept mine dry. If there's lube in there that could cause the empty to back out.

I went to the range today, and the rangemaster said exactly what you guys said.

Clean and dry.

I tried it by running a dry patch just before shooting.

It worked!

50 rounds of Stinger ammo with no malfunctions!

You guys are great!!!!! Thank you. Thank you for knowing what you are doing.

I must have been previously leaving lubrication in the chambers.
