OK, need some help identifying S&W revolver model numbers and their "characteristics." I just bought a model 19-2, 4" gun and love it. Want to get a 6" version for range plinking, and possibly deer hunting (figure inside 25 yards).

#1- What is difference in square butt, "K" and "L" frame guns? I think they have same grip, but "L" has beefier frame and full underlug (is that the correct term?)

#2- If I am correct in my understanding of K & L frames, what is the model number a blue, .357 mag, 6 shot, 6" L frame? Does it exist?

#3- What is price range on VG+-EXC condition shooter (not a collector). What's screaming good? What's average good buy? What's "people are asking $XXX, but you're a fool if you pay it" high end?

As always, thanks!

The L is a tad larger in the frame. Butt is the same as the K.

581 and 586 come to mind (fixed and adjustable) although there are probably others. Check the S&W website for a list of models.

Can't help on price since I haven't shopped for one. Scan AuctionArms and GunBroker auction listings and see what folks are bidding.

If you have an early 19 you may not be happy with the post 1982 guns.

Correct on question #1.

The model number on blued, adjustable sighted L- frames is 586;
with the 581 being a fixed sighted L-frame in blue or nickel.

Price range varies, depending on condition, location, etc. I just
sold a well used (but NOT abused) 6" S&W model 586 L-frame
for $299 OTD, in our local shop. A police officer wanted to make
a PPC gun out of it. As a matter of fact, that is the first trade
in of a BLUED 586 we've had in a long time! :uhoh: :D

BTW, fair market price on a LNIB 586 could run as little as $275,
or as much as $375 in my area; dependent on factors I mentioned.
