I bought a 629-1 (used) last year that came with the stock target grips.
Those target grips were uncomfortable in the extreme. I could fire only a few full-house 240gr pills down range before giving it up.
Here is how they look on my 629-1:
I then thought maybe the rubber Houges would do the trick. No love. If anything, they were worse than the target stocks. An image of the Hogues (not my 629):
I was kind of at a loss. I had never been particularly recoil sensitive, but htis 629 was eating my lunch. I could only fire a string of rounds with powder-puff reloads.

Well, THR came to the rescue by giving me some other ideas, specifically the old-school Magna grips & Tyler T-grip.
---------
Good luck finding original N-frame magna grips. Not to be found locally. They have not come standard on S&W N-frmaes in many a long year. The best price I saw on a decent set was $50, which I paid, on gunbroker.com. Here is an image of the grips I bought:
Here is an image of a blued 29 with magnas:
Then, I ordered a Tyler T-grip. I lucked out and they had what I wanted in stock (polished bronze). They mostly make them as they are ordered, so it is usually weeks before you see them:
----------
Well, whaddaya know? Yesterday, I shot a box of 50 factory full-house Winchester 240gr JSP and the only thing that stung was my wallet! I was pleasantly amazed that hard bronze & skinny wood could do what squooshy rubber could not.
