I called S&W about 2 months ago to have a 686 no-dash gun sent in for the firing pin bushing recall. I was told I would have a pre-paid return tag within 72 hours, either by email or snail-mail.

Well, 72 hours came and went, so did another month.

I called again, this time the gentleman on the phone did everything to convince me that I don't need to send it in for the recall. I told him I wished to have the recall work done. He finally agreed and I got the same 72 hour spiel.

Well, 72 hours came and went, so did another month.

You know, I'm a reasonable person, if they are not going to accept a revolver for recall, then say that. Jerking around customers is the fastest way to lose them.

Any suggestions as to my next move? :fire:

S&W is having big shipping problems right now. I waited about a month of some warranty replacement parts. If you call back, get some kind of incident number you can reference on subsequent calls. It could be that the pre-paid shipping labels are subject to the same major shipping delay.

I realize they are possibly still struggling with the recall of their very popular Shield semi-auto pistol.

I will see if I can get to someone higher up.

Possibly the 7 month backlog of returned guns is whats causing the delay.

New "S&W's" should come with a return shipping tag.

Hate to hear that, I've always had exceptional customer service from S&W.

In the past, they have shipped me parts that arrived the same week I ordered them.

I picked up a Model 649 a couple of years ago off of Gun Broker. It was a police trade-in. I got it at a great price. It shot awesome, but, had a little end shake. Also, I discovered when I cleaned it, if I did not hold the cylinder tight it would jump over the frame stud. It would also do this at times when I ejected empty casings.

I called S&W and was told they could replace the frame stud on older models. They replaced it and corrected the end shake for $62.00. Turn around at that time was about two weeks on my gun. That was a bargain on an older non-warranted gun being brought back to factory specs.

It locks up now like a bank vault (no end shake), and the frame stud works like it should.

Explain your situation nicely and I am pretty sure you will get the kind of response you are looking for.

I just got a 586 back for the same recall. S&W had the gun for three weeks.

I have a 586 no dash

Called S&W on this same recall about 2 years ago. Spoke with a technician there for about 10 minutes who was very convincing that I really didnt need the work done. He said the problems only occur with hand loads hotter than published max data and at one point there were brands of ammo with really soft primer cups most all of which no longer exists.

He went on to say I could have the work done if I so desired, but it would be on my dime and shooter to shooter I should shoot and enjoy my firearm instead of worrying about a 20 year old recall. I dont know why he said S&W would charge me for the work, but he did. Others who post had their work done for free it appears.

Since I have no desire to shoot anything other than factory 38s and 357s and mid range hand loads, I have kept the 586 M stamped free.

He was blowing smoke up your skirt. Call S&W again the next day and get another customer service rep to make your request. I have had several guns done over the past several years, the last one being about 6 month ago. They sent a shipping tag for all of them and did excellent work on the recall. If you use your gun for hunting or other serious work, you should have the gun fixed for reliability.

I used the customer service email. I asked about the recall, I received A note that said if you use the gun for defense the modifications should be made and if I wanted they would send a mailing label. I said yes received a label and within a month had the gun back.

FWIW I just had some warranty work done by S&W on my (brand new) .44 v comp. They turned it block to block in two weeks. No delays here. OTOH, it was a brand new gun that was bad out of the box.
