S&W SD9VE 9mm or a Taurus?

Between Taurus and S&W I’d always go with S&W. I’m not a huge S&W fan but I know for certain they are a higher quality gun manufacturer than Taurus. Taurus has come a long way since the bad reputation they once had, but in no way are they on S&W’s level yet. Anybody who argues this doesn’t truly know the gun industry these days. I’d even explore ruger options over Taurus, and I’m not a ruger fan either. Not saying you can’t get a good g3 or whatever, but chances are you’ll get a better gun from big blue.

Sd9ve is a decent pistol but I wouldn't pay the going rate these days. I'd spring for the m&p 2.0 or even a used one of it could be had for the same money.

G3 Taurus.JPG S&W 9SDV.JPG Now that's strange, I just bought a Taurus G3 and a S&W SD9VE. (I'm a terrible impulse buyer) and I would rate them as both very good guns. One amendment though, the trigger on the Smith was way to heavy for me so I put on an Apex kit. They both are now about equal and I paid about the same amount for each, roughly $300.00.

I have several taurus pistols. the TCP 380 , the g2c, the g3c, m85 38 stub,709 slim and pt 1911. All very good guns.
finally after several hundred rounds through the 380, I had to send it back to taurus. Since they no longer make it ,
I had the option of any gun on the website with my 257$ credit and I pay the difference on the new gun. I chose the
G3 which will be here in a few days. with the good luck I've had with my other guns, I'm sure it will be a good one too.
I own several Rugers, Kahrs, and Smiths, but for the money it's hard to beat a Taurus. I do like the S&W 380 EZ quite a lot.

I have a S&W M&P40 (Gen 1) and a Taurus G2c, G3c. I prefer my Taurusai (plural?) over my S&W simply because of the ergonomics.

I purchased the Taurus Millennium G2 PT111 in 2016 as a cheap gun to throw in a GHB. I wish I had purchased the SD9VE. I've never had a malfunction with the PT111, but I don't shoot it much. On some of the PT111, G2c and G3c pistols, the magazine catch falls out - dropping the magazine. It turns the pistols into one-shot derringers. Actually, trying to load one round in from the top with an open magazine well below would be harder to do than reloading most derringers. Taurus never did a recall or even fixed the problem. It is up to Taurus owners to put a shim in behind the magazine catch spring to rectify the problem.

So I really wish I had purchased the SD9VE instead.

I like everything about my SD9VE, except the trigger. It's bad enough to be a dealbreaker for me. I Apex'd it and that got it to be OK, but still not up even to Glock level.

I shot a buddy's Taurus, and it had a better trigger than the Smith. I can't speak to its long term durability though.

About a year ago I sold a Taurus G2c that had just south of 3000 rounds I put thru it. Not one single failure thru 3000 rounds and I trusted it with my life. I then bought a g3c and it too has been flawless as well as having a better trigger. I liked it so much I now own two G3c's, I have no trouble trusting Taurus with my life because they have proven to me they are reliable. Also the S&W sd9ve is $100 or more than the Taurus around here.

I have a g3c i quite like, it chews on my thumb knuckle but not horribly like glocks and every glock clone do, but thats my only complaint.
I do have a spring kit in it ATM, but even before that a 10" gong at 90ish yrds wasnt that hard to hit when braced and using a dot. Cant do it reliably with the opens but thats not unusual for me.

I had an Sdve9, my only complaint was THE reason I got rid of it. I don't like shell casings landing on me or going over my head.
My G3c does shoot better and has been just as reliable so far.

I wouldn't buy a Taurus if it were my first or only handgun. As a fun gun to play with, sure, but for serious purposes I would prefer the S&W.

Do you mean "cases" ? Casings are what sausages are put into. LOL . just messing with ya , I couldn't resist.

Lol, either way, I don't like hot round objects hitting me in the head!
I do a bit of retention practice occasionally, and the SDVE and M&P9 both bounced cases off the brim of my hat. Both were good shooting and reliable, but now belong to someone else.🙂

I've played with a G2C for a few hundred rounds. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them. Trigger felt great and it was plenty accurate. Matter of fact, b/t playing with a G2C, 66 and Judge, they all functioned fine out of the box. YMMV

I have several Taurus pistols, including two G2Cs. I've been blessed to have zero serious issues with any of them. I also own a S&W SD9 (black slide/ "ghost gray" frame). I shoot all of them about the same. I will say I feel a bit more confident with the SD9 in hand due to the ergonomics. Not saying they're better than the G2C, just a preference.

Either will serve you well.

Have you considered the Stoeger and their STR line?

STR full size (15+1) go for around $250 NIB (only one mag), cheaper if you shop around.

STR9 compact (13+1) for around $238 (only one mag) <--- I have two of these. Bought one, was amazed at the value, and purchased a 2nd.

STR subcompact (10+1) for around $240 (only one mag)

They all come with different package options, such as additional backstraps, additional magazines, and/or cut for optics. Of course, the price will reflect those upgrades.
As much as I like my Taurus G2Cs and SD9, I would choose either of my STR9c pistols over either of these any day (simply because I find them far more ergonomic and shoot them better).
They also have a STR9F 17+1 and STR9 "Combat" 20+1 models, but prices go up for such models.

So many choices in the striker fired 9mm world

Its great !!
I wouldn’t look at just two pistols…
But the new SD9VE 2’s should be great
With the G3’s you can use the mags in a G3c or G2c
I own a G3X .. great pistol
But Id look at CZ’s
Or maybe different Turkish pistols

Or as I mentioned the Dagger line up

I recently came up on this AHSS FXS-9
Duty pistol style 4 inch barrel 17rd capacity uses CZ-75 mags I have a couple of 19rd mags for it .. and fits perfectly in a SA XD-9 holster
Amazing shooting pistol.. it is in my carry rotation actually carried this weekend.
$189.00 well spent

I had the S&W, after I installed a spring kit and a little polish it shot very well and is reliable.

I'm not a huge fan of Taurus, nor the SD9ve. With that said, I shot a Taurus G3 (maybe a G2) recently. With the exception of one of the oddest triggers I've ever felt (and I'm no trigger snob), it ran just fine. And from what I see online (so it must be true, right?), Taurus has done alright with the G line. I passed on getting an SD9ve years ago, but that was because it had about a 9 lb. trigger. But I've been seeing a bunch of pretty good reports on the SD 2.0, and that one looks like they've gotten rid of the hinged trigger in favor of a "dingus trigger." I have absolutely zero idea about whether it's anything like the Shield Plus trigger, but that would be worth investigating.

I have a SD9 VE and was pleased with it until I began having issues with the gun failing to lock back after the last round. It only does it once in a while with both magazines. It has nothing to do with my grip as it has happened to a buddy of mine who I let shoot it and it happened to him as well.

It could be some box of weak ammo or a magazine problem (worn out followers).
