S&W Sigma and SD conversions

Can a S&W Sigma or SD model in 40S&W be converted to 9mm by changing barrels and magazines....like a G23 or 27? I have swapped those out to change to 9mm and it works great. My son -in- law has a Sigma 9mm and his uncle has the 40 S&W...I swapped the barrels and it fits ok...never did do the magazines, but was not planning to shoot it like that either, but now I am wondering if it's doable as safely as the Glock?? Any info will be appreciated!
