SAA colt vs ruger 45colt?

My take on this has to do with ammunition, 900 vs 1000 f.p.s. Its not the velocity but rather the pressure, to some extent.

Some powders can easily hit 1000 f.p.s. (assuming a 250~255 gr. bullet) while staying within reasonable pressure levels, while others are at their peak at the 900 f.p.s. level. Powders such as HP-38 vs. H4227 can reach hivh velocity, but at different pressure levels. And the recoil level difference between 900 and 1000 is slight.

But my idea is that when wanting magnum performance, use magnum guns and ammunition.

Truth. I have both, Ruger and Italian. I don't believe I own a single "range toy", my revolvers are more "tools", for hunting side-arms, and for trekking, exploring, and map and compass fun in the wilderness. Which does not mean I love them any less. !! If I carry a .22 rifle for small game survival purposes, I will take the Super Blackhawk. If I have a powerful rifle or musket, or even a .30WCF, something like that, then I like to take the EL Patron simply because it's much lighter, and since it's less likely to be needed, stepping down from the .44 magnum is not such a big deal. When the pistol is the primary defense weapon, in the wilderness, like when I'm packing a bow and arrows, then a .44mag is a bit more comforting than a slightly hot-loaded .45Colt. If packing a good stout, razor sharp spear, then the EL Patron still feels good. :)

But, as mentioned, squeezing a little more oomph out of it makes sense to me, even if it is only psychological. And as mentioned, I do not shoot those rounds on a regular basis.

By the way, even though different smokeless powders reach peak-pressures differently, (more about the pressure curve than the pressure level) a full 40 grains of black, can hit 1000fps in a 7.5" barrel. With 40 grains of Swiss in my EL Parton's 5.5" barrel, I was getting 890+ to 924fps. So 1000fps is not that far from original ballistics. (but yes, duplicating black powder velocity with smokeless is not always prudent) (although everyone seems to thinks it is "okay" to do in a Trapdoor Springfield. !!!)

My last question though is there anything wrong using standard loads in the ruger?
The short answer is No. 😊
Longer answer is Absolutely Not. :)
Even longer answer is: Probably 99% of the loads I use in my Ruger .45 Colt are so called "standard loads." It's a real pussycat to shoot with regular loads, and I'm pretty good with it when using those loads if I do say so myself.
On the other hand, I know full well a cylinder full of "Ruger Only" loads in my Ruger .45 Colt will have my 75-year-old, tendonitis filled right elbow scolding me for a week afterwards. So, I flinch a lot when I'm trying to show off to someone by exploding milk jugs full of water - it's only natural. 😀

If I didn't carry a side-arm in a grizzly recovery area, I don't think it would ever even occur to me to load a .45 Colt over 900fps. ?
