Sad news... young officer shot and killed, Hollywood, FL

Occurred Sunday night... reports say that officers responded to a suspicious person call where the offender, 18 years old was seen on a bicycle -trying car doors in a residential neighborhood filled with retirees. Officer was shot during the stop -no info at present whether the offender was armed or grabbed an officer's gun... I'll pass along further details as they're reported. During my era in policing we lost three officers every year (1973 - 1995) counting Dade and Broward as a single unit. All were killed on the job - mostly by firearms -but not all...

Anyone wanting additional detail for training purposes, just Google up Hollywood officer shot... Current info notes the young offender had an extensive criminal history...
 
Hopefully valuable lessons can be gleaned from this unfortunate event once investigation concludes and they are available.
 
You can bet that it will be a topic for every training unit in this area as they look into exactly what occurred (and what tactics could be improved upon...). Towards the end of my career I was in charge of training among other stuff for my hundred man department so, even years later... I pay attention. This is of course a "policing incident" but it has implications for every armed citizen in the country. At night every residential area will have young and not so young folks out and about - 99% are never a problem - the few that are trouble can be real trouble if you're not careful...
