Well, I've been interested in getting a little .22lr rifle for plinking and working on my rifleman skills. I had a very nice Remington pump .22 that my dad got me as a kid, but he let it get all rusted and I'm embarrassed to take it out in public until I can get it refinished.

So there I was on my lunchbreak yesterday. Had a burger and dropped into the local hunter's HQ to browse. About ten minutes later, I walked out with a Marlin 981T bolt-action .22lr. It's not what I was looking for, prefering something mag-fed w/ a stainless bbl, but it was all they had and it's American-made.

I really shouldn't go "browsing" when I'm having a bad day!

Long story short, I'd like to get a better stock and sights, but I'm unsure regarding available aftermarket products. The stock has a sharp-ridged comb that is not comfortable, and doesn't put your head in a good position to acquire the sights. I would also like something with more defined pistol-grip like you see on target/sniper rifles. I really wasn't even holding onto the grip when pulling the trigger because it puts my hand at an funky angle.

As for sights, I'm planning on a scope in the near future (something around 5x, variable), but I'd like to have better, more visible iron sights first. The front sight is plain black and invisible on a black bullseye. The rear sight is a shallow notch and not easily adjusted for windage.

Anyone have this make/model? Thoughts? Know of any aftermarket stocks available?

Oh, and I plan on passing this rifle on to my little nephew when he gets a bit older. I'd like to tune it in (read: play with it a bit before giving it up :D )

Hope ya'll can help. I'll be taking it to a better range this weekend and will be sure to report back with better stats.

Boyd's has a walnut stock here, for about $51, but I'm not certain it will work with the 981. On the other hand, you can buy a brown laminated stock direct from Marlin for about $75 here.

Be sure to order the 881/983 stock, as the 880/925 and 882/982 models are box magazine fed.

V, thanks the the sympathy. I can't believe my dad did that, but at least it gave me a solid excuse to buy another rifle. Gotta look on the bright side!

A, I was thinking about ordering a wood stock from Marlin, but I'm afraid it won't be anything more than a wooden copy of what I already have. I'd ideally like to get something that has a more pronounced pistol grip and more comfortable comb, though I can put a pad on the comb.

I'll be calling Boyd's this afternoon. Hopefully, they'll have something neat to ship me!

Thanks again, for the ideas. I'll report back with the results.
