BATON ROUGE, LA (Sept. 22) – The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and National Rifle Association (NRA) joined with individual gun owners in Louisiana Thursday morning, filing a motion in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana seeking a temporary restraining order to stop authorities in and around the City of New Orleans from seizing firearms from private citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Very interesting. I can't remember NRA ever working with or even acknowledging other RKBA groups before. I'd love to hear the backstory on this one.

Total speculation on my part; but I'd guess SAF probably has somebody with standing and a good case and saw the advantage in making use of the NRAs resources. On the other hand, the NRA probably saw the advantage in teaming up with SAF and getting good news out now rather than waiting for their own investigators to turn up a good case.

SAF has members all over the country that they can sue on behalf of. They don't need to name the affected New Orleans-area members, either. This is case law based mostly on old NAACP/MLKJr-era cases of the 1950s/60s.

Ditto NRA of course.

Is GOA boycotting the suit?

After reading the constant sniping at the NRA by Gun Owners of America members who claim that the NRA does nothing to help gun owners I expected that GOA would have filed such a suit already. Does anyone know if GOA is saving its energy for something else it considers more helpful to gun owners in New Orleans?

Suit Filed to Halt New Orleans Gun Seizures

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and National Rifle Association (NRA) joined with individual gun owners in Louisiana Thursday morning, filing a motion in United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana seeking a temporary restraining order to stop authorities in and around the City of New Orleans from seizing firearms from private citizens in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Arbitrary gun seizures, without warrant or probable cause, have been reported during the past three weeks since the Crescent City was devastated by the hurricane. In cases reported to SAF, police refused to give citizens receipts for their seized firearms. Earlier, SAF insisted that police account for all seized firearms, disclose their whereabouts, and explain how they will be returned to their rightful owners. Authorities have not responded.

Gun confiscations have been highly publicized since the New York Times quoted New Orleans Police Superintendent P. Edwin Compass III, who said, "Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons," and ABC News quoted Deputy Police Chief Warren Riley stating, "No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons."

Until now I was pretty sure the whole GOA vs. NRA non-debate was normal special olympics type internet blather. Maybe I need to readjust my tinfoil hat, but the blatantly divisive attempt at trolling immediately above has made me a bit suspicious of the whole thing.

Sarah... Sarah is that you??? :scrutiny:
