Anyone have any ideas?

I need to put wooden drawers in my safe to store files and jewelry. I have an AMSEC safe and yes I know AMSEC sells two Store-It Cabinets. A two drawer cabinet and a four drawer cabinet. That's what I'm looking for but I'm not looking to pay $300 a piece for them. And those cabinets are only 14 inches deep. My safe has 19 inches of room for depth. Thats five inches of wasted space from an already small safe.

There has to be something else for a lot less than $600 or so. What have you'all done for drawers inside a safe? If it helps I have a BF6030.

You might consider one of those small Sentry firesafe/waterproof boxes. Doubles your protection against fire, would help to keep the water out from the fire hoses and the smaller ones fit nicely on a shelf. This solution probably does not look or fit as well as the shelves but it does help to keep everything organized.

RC, a plastic storage box is what I'm using now. I was looking for a nice wooden cabinet. The plastic boxes work OK for the jewelry but my biggest inconvenience is the hanging file folders. I have them in a box right now and it’s a pain and a mess to take them out and fish through them to get to the right folder every time I have to file something. I really need a cabinet that has a drawer that you can hang file folders in.

It looks like I might have to cave in and take the time to build one myself. I can do it but it will take me a while. Too bad no one makes affordable ones. Just can't believe it.

Or, maybe I'm the only one who stores file folders in a safe?

No, you're not the only one. I use the Sentry fireproof boxes that 78tsubaki recommended. They have a single drawer filing cabinet sized box. I took out the bottom shelf of my safe and the Sentry box fits there perfectly. It's more secure than being loose in my house, fireproof (my safe is not), and everything is in one place and can be quickly removed if I have to bug out.

Hanging file folders are a real PITA no matter how you do it.

Have you considered an accordian file or two for the importent papers?

No I didn't but that's a good idea. I could do that but it still leaves me with something nicer to do for the jewelry and other stuff. For some reason I'm stuck on finding one solution that fits all and that also looks decent. Not that I will be displaying it to everyone or anything. It has to be easy to use.

I can't find anything other than what AMSEC sells http://www.amsecusa.com/StorageCabinets-Main.htm. And as I think I mentioned before, these drawers aren't as deep as the safe is. So there's a bunch of wasted space IMO. I honestly think this search for a storage solution stems from the safe being too small. If I only had a bigger one. ;) Twice as big would've been right. Anyone looking for a used BF6030? I was able to find the AMSEC drawers a little cheaper. There are two websites that sell both for about $450 delivered. Money better spent on ammo. Actually, the gun show is this Saturday so it will be money spent on another semi-auto. One has to have their priorities in order.

So, that means I'm building my own. I'm thinking I can build one for well under $200. But that's just a guess. I'll take pictures as I go so you'all can see start to finish. It'll either be a crash and burn or a usefull cabinet in the end. TBD.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

More ammo would be good.

Until now I've only seen their drawers in their bigger safes like this

I just found an exact picture of a BF6030 with all of their drawers in it.

Not much room left for long guns or really anything else. That's tight. This picture has the drawers pushed forward towards the front of the safe. If these drawers are in fact 14 3/8" D and if they were pushed to the back all the way then there would be just about 5" between the front of them and the back of the door when closed. Assuming you have nothing hanging on the back of the door.

Seriously thinking about selling it and getting a bigger one.

Which is exactly why I bought the BF 66x36.
I also looked in on those spec built drawers for our BF's myself and found them to be a great deal cheaper going to some of the online safe outfits.
You also have to buy a replacement center wall/gunrack kit to make the drawers fit in next to the center divider wall, because there is not enough room with the standard factory setup.
I *think* that is part of the drawer kit.
Call Amsec if in doubt.

heeler, did you end up purchasing the AMSEC drawers form an online safe outfit? If so how do you like them? Did you get one drawer or two? Do you still have enough room in your safe?

I have started to build my own and am looking for ideas. I'm starting out with the drawer itself which has to be a specific width for the file folders and all of the rest of the drawers are going to be the same width. I decided on 4 drawers all the same depth and width but one is going to be 10" tall, one 4" and two 2" tall. I found a company online that makes custom drawers alone. They make one at a time or thousands. I ordered them from Valendrawers.com with dovetail corners. The next step is to order the drawer slides. Then I can start on the cabinet and finally the drawer faces.

Z Man,no I did not.
I really liked the looks of them but I had two issues with them.
Number one was the fact that I have many hunting rifles, all of which are scoped and therefore needed all the room necessary for them.
Second since everything I have read here and other places says gun safes are not truely real fire safes so really important papers should be put into a UL rated firebox and THEN placed into the gun safe.
Orginally I was going to purchase the two drawer unit because of the file drawer for important papers and documents and then thought twice about it for the previously mentioned reason of fire protection.
So all important papers are in two Sentry 1100 fireboxes inside the sturdy BF.
Between the supposedly superior fire protection of the BF along with the added protection of the fireboxes I think I am covered pretty good for document protection.
Fwiw the house next door to me burned to the ground back in 1985 and the next day I helped the poor woman sift thru the remains specifically looking for the very same Sentry box I use.
We found it and after prying it open all of her paper goods were fine along with four one hundred dollar bills.
That was a very intense fire as her home was utterly destroyed.
A complete burn down.

Safe Drawers

I may have an option. You should always put important papers, cd's , pictures etc. in a small safe such as the sentury that was stated earlier. But I was just at the 2010 shot show and we found a manufacturer who is making a very attractive safe insert/storage case that might fit your needs. I will have the exact specs on it by the end of the week if you are still in need.

Southland, I have already started to make my own but would be interested in what you found for my next BIGGER safe. I would be interested to know if the price of that insert/storage case was as attractive as it looked?
