I live in California. I'm looking at both of these rifles very closely. The Saiga 7.63x39 is simply awesome but then I'm looking at some modifications down the road if and when it's legal. The AR is equally impressive but it has that bullet button which kind of kills it for me... Any suggestions if you had to get one? Yes, the Saiga is much cheaper. I want a range friendly, SHTF battle rifle that is 100% reliable and is not compromised in structure or function. I'm fully aware of what's legal and what's illegal in CA and I do not want to get into a CA legal discussion. Just a comparison of these two rifles. Thanks!

CMMG AR-15 Configuration- $1039.00 +tax

Saiga 7.62x39- $399.00 +tax

I would go the saiga, just think, you will get a bag, a scope rail, a scope, several hundred rounds, a front site tool, and set of cleaning gear, a bore snake, and several mags, all for about 500 bucks.
also I'm gonna throw another one out there, it is much like a allready converted Saiga, with a Steyr bbl. It is called the STG 2000, sold by Atlantic Firearms, and it is also quite nice.

A lot of people overlook the fact that a factory Saiga is a kickass rifle on its own. Kalashnikov reliability. Kalashnikov accuracy.

A large reason that people "convert" their Saigas back to military aspect is to exercise their freedom to do so. They also do it if they have other Kalashnikovs ( the factory Saiga balances differently in the hand than a standard Kalash ).

wow...$399.00 for a saiga??? damn...

i had the same problem a few months ago... saiga vs ar, i end up buying the saiga 20'' .223 first because i didn't have any gun in .223 and they look sweet with the skeleton stock in a 20'' barrel, well now i'm halfway builing my first ar hehehe.... the best thing you can do is get both, go for the saiga and then built an AR15 you'll save money

Ive found that the Saiga .223 is an excellent rifle, and have compared it to my RRA LAR-15 at the range...OK,the RRA is somewhat more accurate but for the bucks...the Saiga was a much better price.

399. is a lot for a Saiga, can you not buy it over the net, and pay for it in Cali at a more reasonable price???

Trouble is, you can't find a Saiga in any configuration at any of the more reasonably priced outlets. I just happened to be lucky enough to run across a 7.62 a couple of weeks ago for $323 and snapped it up. I paid for another Saiga in full about two months ago and haven't seen it yet. I was at an LGS last week that is run by a guy from California and he had a .223 Saiga for $399. I guess I should have told him that he is in the midwest now and can't get those Cali prices here.

That being said, I have the Saiga and bought an CMMG stripped lower yesterday so I can build an AR as I get the funds. That way I don't have to try and decide which is better.:D
