Hey Guys-

Considering all option which do you prefer?

30 round magazines that fit stock Saiga's, Surefires? ProMags?
Install "feed ramp" and use East Block Surplus AK Mags?

Which is the best option and which do you prefer or use?

Thanks
Josh

Feed ramp is easy to make and install depending on how handy you are. Then you can use either/any mag you wish.

If you can find the 30rd thermolds they will work without a feed ramp (just file the back catch a bit). I think ioinc has them for 15.

the path less traveled....

I'm not at all concerned about compatibility with other AK mags, as I'm not planning on joining up with any type of militia :neener:

Also, I wanted to maintain the ability to use the factory 10 round mag for shooting prone or off the bench.

So...

I made a bullet guide from 3/4" black iron pipe, which wasn't to difficult at all. My only tip is that you install it with a #8 screw.... unless you enjoy removing broken #6 taps :(

Ensure the BG isn't to long, or you'll have to shave a bit off of the stock Saga poly mag.

Filing down the lock tabs on mil. sup. mags is easy cheesy. Use your Stock mag. as a guide, go slow and test fit frequently. Once you have a good one, you can go faster on the rest of them. Mine lock in nice and tight.

You will then have the bonus of a legitimate excuse for not lending out your mags, as they won't work in standard AKs.

feed ramp, then eat them all...

if you want the ability to use any "unmodified" high cap mag. you will also have to enlarge the notch in the magazine catch on the rifle.

The sporter Saiga mag has a thinner lock tab, and the notch in the rifle's catch is smaller.

To run high caps, you either have to grind the tab on the mil. surp. mag thinner, or enlarge the notch in mag. catch on the rifle.

If you modify the rifle, the 10 round sporter mags will no longer be useable in your rifle.

This is why I chose to modify my mil. surp. mags. and not the rifle. But this is not the most popular way to do it.

I got SureFire 20-round mags to fit my unmodified Saiga .223, and they work great, no bullet guide needed. Got those from Gilberts, and they make larger capacities. I've heard a lot of bad stuff about Promags, but have no direct experience.
