My Saiga has what appears to be a thread protector on the end of the barrel. I've been thinking about a flash hider or compensator for awhile so I've gotten curious.

-IS- this a thread protector or, if so how can I remove it?

EDIT:Yeah, and this isnt exactly a stock Saiga

nor is mine, i figured since i was welding on it yesterday i couldn't hurt it by using a pipe wrench on it...

whatever it is you can't turn it with a 10" pipe wrench, this would suggest that it's either pressed on there or pressed/threaded on there and welded to the front sight block...

have you asked on the saiga forum yet?

Are you sure it's not just the chrome lining you're looking at? Looks like a normal barrel with chrome lining to me, though the pictures aren't clear enough to be 100%.

Theres a 'sleeve' over the end of the barrel of -some- sort. Theres the chrome lining, the barrel..and then another peice of metal over that.

Didn't notice anything like that on my uncle's Saiga, but then again - I'm not usually looking down the bore. :uhoh:

try this..

Well, you got me on that one! I know my WASR-10 has a nut welded onto the bore (which I need to remove someday, by the way) to get around import laws. It's entirely possible that the manufacturer of the Saiga had to do something similar, and of course did it in a much more discreet way than our Romanian friends.

Wow thats...alittle scary. Any estimates on how much for a gunsmith to install a flash hider/comp for me? This assuming I supply the hardware to be installed.
