Saiga waste of money?

I liked my Saiga .410 so much I had to get a S-12.
Liked my S-12 so much,I added a second one to the collection.
I also have many Saiga rifles, hands down great products.

So it's based on an AK? Alliance Armament has some near versions, but pricey!

I had a Tromix converted S12 and should never have sold it.

Great shotgun, lots of fun but not all that practical for hunting (although tons of fun busting clays).

If you plan on shooting 3-gun with one, keep in mind that the Saiga puts you up in the "unlimited" class (I believe that's the designation) ... so unless you're pretty good you're not going to be as competitive (but you'll have a heckova lot of fun)

Tromix look great! Isn't that short gun a SBS and require class III rules?

Yes if its <18" barrel on a shotgun it's a SBS. $200 tax and have to live in a state that allows them. I'm starting to get the itch to go that route on mine.

Yeah, me too. Is the wait as painful for SBS as it was for my suppressor?

I recently acquired an S-12 and I absolutely love it. Everything that I've seen and learned leads me to this conclusion. The Saiga 12 is a tinkerer's shotgun. If you want a great, out of the box semi-auto shotgun, get a Benelli. If you want an interesting shotgun that, with some work and some money, can be the single most awesome shotgun in your collection, get the Saiga 12. I have had more fun shooting and tinkering on my S-12 than almost anything else in my arsenal and I want more Saigas in a variety of calibers now.

kinda
I mean it's a great gun, and probably a great 'assault' shotgun
But....
I don't shoot sporting clays, and I think the local club would think it was FA, and claim your cheating,
but I don't think it is a very 'useful' gun

It is however a very fun gun.

I saw one at a gun show that looked nice. The guy wanted $450 for it and I really considered it. Problem is, you don't really know what is a good one apart from a problematic one, at least I don't. I'm sure the guy selling it is going to say it's perfect. I fear I'd really want to pay the extra for the Tromix and know I was getting quality. Just bought a Mossberg 930 SPX instead, but one day I want that Saiga-12.;)

they are russian import shotguns and rifles based, AK's actually, made in the same factory that originally made AK47 and AKM

Alliance Armament has a VERY poor reputation in the saiga community. I would completely avoid them.

LGS said that the Russians took away the subsidy and imzensk is bankrupt so no more siaga

First of all if you heard it at the LGS that all but assures it is BS. This rumor has popped up once or twice a year for the last couple years. There has never been anything to it before and I doubt there is now. People ought to fact check before repeating rumors that spread FUD.

actually that is a steal at 450, most go 600+

At various times the prices have been high while the importers waited for more to be shipped. That is not the current situation. Right around $450 is pretty standard price right now (at least around these parts and where I look online). Its a good price, nothing great. $600 would be a total rip off right now.

Its very useful for certain tasks. Less so for others, like most guns are.

The saiga is a great gun if you are willing to spend a little more and get it setup to your liking. Mine are some of my favorite guns and there is one I shoot as often as any gun I own. They are very fun, can be insanely formidable fighting shotguns if one sets one up for that tasks and learns to run it. They are are such solid 3 gun performers that even a box stock gun will land you in open class. When I shoot 3 gun style courses I turn much faster times with my S12 than anything else I've used.
