theres been talk on tv about the mayor and the DA want to get tough on gun control, but it seems like they are very lenient against criminals being in possession of firearms

An exerp from the August 17th Daily Update Bayview Newsletter
Gun Case Dispositions
I mentioned back in March that we were going to begin tracking our gun
arrest cases in an effort to find out why so many armed gang members seem
to be on the streets of the Bayview, even though our officers are arresting
them on a constant basis. We have almost six month's worth of data, and it
was a bit shocking when we first started to take a look at it. Although
the cases of most of the individuals arrested for gun charges in the past
six months have not yet been settled, 17 cases have been, and these are the
results:
A man booked for a stolen, loaded and concealed handgun pled guilty to a
misdemeanor and was given 3 years probation and 3 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for a loaded and concealed handgun was given misdemeanor
probation.
A man booked for a loaded and concealed handgun pled guilty to a felony and
was given 90 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of an assault rifle pled guilty to a
misdemeanor and was given 3 years probation and 90 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a concealed handgun and drugs had the gun
charge dismissed and the drug charge prosecuted.
A man booked for aggravated assault with a firearm had the case dismissed.
A man booked for possession of an assault rifle had the case dismissed.
A man booked for possession of a concealed handgun with obliterated serial
numbers pled guilty to a misdemeanor and was given 3 years probation and 90
days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a loaded and concealed handgun pled guilty
to a misdemeanor and was given three years probation and 2 days in the
County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a loaded and concealed handgun pled guilty
to a felony and was given 83 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a loaded and concealed handgun had the case
dismissed.
A man booked for possession of a stolen, concealed, and loaded handgun pled
guilty to a misdemeanor and was given 90 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a firearm by a felon pled guilty to a
misdemeanor and was given 37 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a firearm by a felon pled guilty to a felony
and was given 6 months in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a firearm by a felon pled guilty to a
misdemeanor and was given 37 days in the County Jail.
A man booked for possession of a firearm with obliterated serial numbers
had the case dismissed.

Wonder what would happen if you or I were found with an assault rifle. 10 years?

This sounds exactly like the system in 1984 where the real criminals were treated like old friends by the justice system while the political criminals were sent to room 101.

Galileo- Why are you surprised? Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Should the police be allowed to convict everyone they arrest on the spot? Besides, everyone knows through watching TV that it is much easier to have the defendant plead guilty to a lesser charge than to have a trial.

Criminals perform a valuable service to liberal politicians.

By generating fear among the law-abiding populace, and keeping the violent crime statistics high, they serve as enablers for ever-increasing taxes and nanny state laws.

"For a safe and secure society..."

Performing a great service for our government!?

[sarcasm]YES! give them all jobs then, i'm glad they are affecting our government so positively!!:D[/sarcasm]

:scrutiny:

:cuss:

enforcement, enforcement, enforcement... from the police end, and from the legal end. catch those doing serious harm, punish them for it (not some limited petty offense), and move to the next case.

yea yea, i know its harder than that, but if we don't do it the right way, the 'easy' way will drag us all down with it.

Galileo, have you cross posted this on calguns.net?

This comes as no suprise for anyone who lives/works in SF. The DA's office has shown a marked reluctance to prosecute anything, even murder. The causes of this... who knows:confused:

From my experience trying to get a large junkie/bum encampment driven out of the area around a shop I managed there are a couple of factors that hamper law enforcement in the city. First you have a large population of rich (read: influential) liberal types who believe that people wouldn't be crackheads shooting eachother if we built more rec centers and gave more hugs. Saddly these sorts have never lived in a crappy neighborhood in their lives and don't know what's really going on. The cops I spoke too said that members of the department had been sued personally for aggressively going after the bums and junkies.

Second, you have the community activist/political types who scream bloody murder when the cops snatch the vermin off the street. Strangely these groups seem to be a lot of the friends and family of said vermin. So, in the news, you have the banger/wannabe thugs hanging out in front of the liquor store turned into innocent youths just walking down the street. I've actually read statements from the Supervisor who's district holds the Bayview saying the city needs to help get a Home Depot built because there are no jobs in the neighborhood. Bear in mind this is a city that is only seven square miles and and has a pretty OK public transit system. If people ain't getting off their asses to go to work now, building it down the street isn't going to make a difference.

There seem to be some judges that need to be locked up, but in a mental institution!

Looks good to me. The only actual (malum in se) crime I saw on the list was the assault (which should have been prosecuted, if there was evidence to support); everything else looks to be a victimless "crime." (Yeah, the "stolen gun" crimes, but proving that the accused knew it was stolen can be hard; they should go to trial too, if there's evidence.)

Many of those "offenses" would apply to me. It's just my good fortune that I'm in Las Vegas instead of the Bay Area.

Lessee...

"possession of a loaded and concealed handgun?" That's me. Daily.
How about "possession of an assault rifle?" Maybe I should plead the 5th on that one.
