Savage 10FCM Scout

Has anyone handled or owned one of the second generation Savage Scouts? I've got a couple questions for anyone who has:

1) Looking at the pictures online, the scout rail mount looks as though it could be a little fragile, especially compared to the mounting rib on the Ruger Frontier. Can anyone comment on its robustness?

2) Is the synthetic stock it comes with as flexy/wimpy as the ones they came with in years past? I have heard some mention that they made an effort in recent years to improve the rigidity of their synthetics.

3) Is the barrel free-floated?

4) Is there anyway (including removing the peep sight) to also mount a scope in the typical fashion over the receiver?

Thanks in advance for any feedback. I'd also be interested to hear from anyone who owns or has tried both the Ruger Frontier and Savage Scout. I'm mainly interested in a .308.

1. I never had any issues with the mount not being stable enough. It's held in by three screws instead of the normal four on a regular mount, but that seemed to be enough. I didn't have any problems shooting 1.5" 100 yard groups with handloads when I had mine.

2. Can't comment. The stock on mine had a little flex and could have stood to be a little stiffer. But it was serviceable. I had mine about 5 years ago.

3. IIRC, the barrel was free floated. I don't think the stock touched it anywhere under normal circumstances. It had enough flex that could could bend it over to touch the barrel but I can't see how that would happen unless you made it happen. One thing mine did do though: you could put two shots through the same hole, one right after the other. The third shot from a group would usually go about an inch higher. The fourth shot would generally be about 3" higher than that. I didn't notice this when allowing the barrel to cool between shots and I didn't consider it a problem for hunting. If you've fired three shots at a deer you've probably already lost it anyhow.

4. Not that I know of. But you could put a regular scope on one, then put a factory sight on the barrel. The forward mounting hole for the scope mount is in the right position for it. I thought about doing this, but I figured it would be pointless. I was already getting great groups with the little 2x Simmons LER scope so what would I have gained?

I had one for years that was my primary hunting rifle. Loved it. I took it to a rifle course once with Randy Cain, after about 200 rounds the mount loosened up and we had to LocTite it down, but that was full house FN 147 gr ammo too,

The fore end could have used a bit of stiffening on mine but was perfectly usable under normal conditions, the barrel was, indeed, free floated.

It was a fast, accurate and very comfortable rifle, I wish circumstances had not forced me to sell it. Below is a pic of me holding the rifle with a 150 lbs hog I shot with it at a measured 152 yards.

Maybe I'll check out this "new & improved" (BTW how is that possible? If it's "new" it couldn't be "improved"!) Scout...I sure do miss my old one...
