Finally got a scope for the 10fp I bought several weeks back
and took it to the range on saturday. With a few clicks of
the scope I was consistently putting rounds in a 3" diameter
target at 100 yards.

That may not sound like much, but I've never shot - much less
owned a rifle (other than a shotgun) before. Tons of fun with
milsurp 308. The bolt seems a bit stiff as I cycled through
the rounds, I assume that it will loosen up a bit with use.

I had my shop bore-sight the scope for me. At the range it was
about 10" low and about 10" to the left of center at 100 yards.
Is this excessive? I was able to use the scope adjustments to
it on target, but I'm wondering if I should try to improve
the bore-sighting to increase the range of my elevation and
windage adjustments?

Congrats on your first center-fire rifle! The Savage is an underdog in a world full of Remmie's and Winnie's. The 10FP is a fine rifle for 100 yard stuff and will serve you well without breaking the bank.

Now then, Milsurp? Fine for other rifles, but if you want better groups, get better ammo. Military surplus stuff isn't as consistant as newer commercial ammo available. For instance, in my 10FP I use Federal Gold Match 168 grn BTHP. With a Bushnell Banner 3-9X40. I can overlap 3 shots at 100 yards. (It begins to drift after that if I don't let it cool down though)

The rifle is only as good as the ammo you feed it. If all you want is to plink, it's great fun. But if you want more accuracy, be prepared to shell out a little more money.

Oh, and clean it good. Milsurp tends to run dirty.

If someone boresighted a rifle for me and it was off that much, I'd ask for a re-do, or lap the rings.

Have fun!

do you have the Accu-trigger? what scope are you using? what rings & bases?

with port. surplus ammo, i stay right around .75" - 1" 3@100yrds.

i boresighted my 10FP using the bi-pod and looking through the bore w/ the bolt removed. i did it from my kitchen table using a nest that was 150yrds or so away. when i went to the range, i was off about 2" high and to the right at 100yrds.

Yes it has the accu-trigger. The scope is a Leupold VariX-III 4.5-14X40.

Base & rings are Leupold too. The rear ring has a windage adjustment at the base.

I think I may re-bore sight it. I can see getting the right-left adjustment fixed by bore
sighting, but I don't know how I can change the elevation.

I'll have to do more field work :) before I can come up with an accurate MOA
reading. I'm still getting the hang of it.

The scope also has a parallex (sp?) adjustment. Any idea what that does?
(besides cost more?)

"Parallax (from http://www.myoan.net/tipstricks/riflescopeterm.html)
A condition that occurs when the image of the target is not focused precisely on the reticle plane. Parallax is visible as an apparent movement between the reticle and the target when the shooter moves his head or, in extreme cases, as an out-of-focus image. "

so you should adjust the parallax setting for the range you are shooting i.e. 100yrds.

Bore sighting, if done quickly, is not that precise. Especially if done in a shop, where they are either using a tool at a distance of under 3 feet, or the shop wall at maybe 20 feet.

10" is a bit much. You may not be able to adjust the scope far enough to get on target.

But in case you want to try to adjust the scope...

Check the manual for the scope, or look under the dust covers on the adjusting screws, and see what 1 click means at 100 yards. For example, on many scopes 1 click means 1/4" at 100 yards. Ar maybe 1/2" or 1".

Then move the necessary number of clicks in the necessary direction and shoot again. Sounds to me like you need to go 10" up and 10" right. On a 1/4" scope, that's 40 clicks each way. You may not have that much adjustment. If not, have the shop re-mount and/or re-zero.
