The weather was absolutely beautiful today so I played hooky for half a day at work to finally get out with my Savage 111 .30-06 and check out some of my hand loads as well as dial in my new Weaver Grand Slam mildot scope.
I've taken the rifle out a few times before, once with the cheap Simmons scope and then again last weekend but today I finally really started to get everything right.
Previously, when I mounted the new Weaver scope it was off and I couldn't even shoot it til I took it home and remounted the scope right. Sunday I was out in the garage all afternoon and finally got it on right and bore-sighted!
I am using Warne bases and rings. The scope is the Weaver Grand Slam 3x10 40mm with mil/mil adjustment. The glass is beautiful and I love the mildots and how they work, especially the mil/mil adjusting.
I am starting to work through a few handload variants to really see what this rifle loves. I'm using 168 and 178 grains Hornady HPBT match bullets. Today I only really got a chance to shoot the 168 grainers.
Here is a lovely little group at 100 yards. 55 grains of IMR 4350 (it appears, so far, to prefer this loading) and the 168 grain bullet. This was my best group of the day. I only ended up shooting 35 rounds.
I'm happy! Going to keep tweaking it and find a couple different combos it likes. I love my Savage now and have to say I'm really liking the accutrigger too!
