Tonight I'm going to see if I can guess how to disassamble the bolt on a 1940's Savage Model 5, .22 bolt action tube-magazine rifle.

My guess is that I will guess incorrectly.

Anybody here know how to do it?

The Model 5 doesn't ring a bell, but dis/reassembly of most of those .22 rifle bolts involves driving out pins and then fighting a powerful mainspring to get things back together. Some require use of a slave pin for reassembly.

My advice is to not take it apart unless you have to do so to replace a part. Cleaning can usually be accomplished by dunking the bolt in a cleaning solvent.

Decided Not To Mess with It...

Rather than attempt to disassemble it to clean a sticky extractor, I'm going to give the entire bolt assembly a nice long solvent bath. May light some scented candles for it, too.:D

Looking at the diagram, it would have done no good to disassemble the bolt, since the extractor and spring are in their own place in the front of the bolt and there is no contact with the rest of the bolt.

Soaking in a solvent will probably correct the problem but you can remove the extractor by pushing the plunger back with a small screwdriver and tipping the extractor out. If you do, make sure the spring and plunger don't fly off into the corner.
