I posted this in the Hunting section last week. I posted it there because that was one of the few places on the internet where I had found a discussion on the Savage Model 24. I got no responses so I thought I would post it here (where it probably belongs) and see if anyone had any thoughts.
Hi,
A while back I got a Savage 24F. The gun came drilled and tapped for a side mounting scope mount and one came with it. I recently put a scope on it. The darn thing is pretty accurate given what it is and the truly awful factory trigger pull. However, when I fire the 12 gauge barrel the scope mount shifts! I've remounted the thing a couple of times and the problem won't go away. The problem seems to be that instead of tight round holes like most scope mounts have this mount has two parallel slots both at about a 45 degree angle. I'm sure this was done to give the person mounting the scope some adjustment in the mount because older Savage 24Fs were drilled and tapped for a mount on top of the rifle barrel and I'm told it was a tight fit to mount a scope that way (the rifle barrel is a small, straight tube with no contour). Regardless of why it was done the slots allow the mount to shift when the shotgun barrel is fired. Has anyone out there successfully mounted a scope on one of these newer Savage 24Fs with the side mount?
Thanks.
