Recently bought a 1949 vintage 99 in .300 Savage.

Need a peep ("ghost ring") rear sight, but don't want to drill any new holes.

Internet search turns up some tales about people who bought such sights then had to drill to mount them.

Anyone with some real world experience on this?

Skinner makes a barrel mount aperture. Not nearly as good as a receiver mounted aperture. But still a lot better than the factory sight. I have one mounted on my 99 in 358 Winchester. Just wish I'd added a brass front post as the blued one is hard to pick up on anything but white targets.

I have a 99 that was made in 1918. Had a rear peep but that's not much good for my eyes and antelope hunting that I had planned on using it for.

Guy over on the 24 Hour Campfire Savage forum makes scope mounts that fit in the barrel dovetail and existing rear sight holes. Believe he goes by Lightfoot IIRC. You have to give him dimensions as they can vary by model and year. Cost was somewhere in the $180 range. Very well made and pretty easy to install.

If you still want a replacement peep somebody there will most likely have one
