Ok the new to me 99 is now in my greasy little paws....and I am trying to figure out just when this sucker was made....it has some early features like brass round counter on the side, but getting the serial information with my weak google-fu is failing me. I am getting some conflicting info....and some info that just does not match to my rifle.

The lever boss has 11L on it...that does not add up to anything I have found....all that info says it is to be just a letter saying the date.

The SN# is very high, I don't think they made that many of them.....1011xxx pretty odd again.

So what does the collective here say?

Sorry no photos yet....way past my bed time...perhaps tomorrow if you want them.

I have 2 Word documents about the 99's and all their variations... PM me your email and I'll send them to you, for what they are worth. If you like 99's, they are interesting reading, anyway. If you go to the SavageShooters forum, there are some guys there that know 99's... they might be able to help you further.

99's rock, congrats to you on yours. My second 99 is coming soon... a takedown in .30-30. Can't wait!

I totally agree. I have my Dad's 99F takedown in 30-30, a 99E (rotary) and a 99C (clip) both in .308 Win. Great rifles.

Sorry I forgot to follow up.....looks like 25-20 had the docs I needed easy....it is 1961 I think.

Shot it a few weeks ago when we got a warm spell.

If you have read some of my other posts, I can shoot basically out my back door.....so on that nice day, when the snow was melting and the field was a soggy mess (that is why this section was turned into shooting area after the cows left) I go out and shoot....now the area I shoot is I am guessing 600-ish yards from the house. The wife said by far it is the loudest thing I have shot.....it sounded deep through the ears but not 3006 loud...and I was shooting a garand at the same time, she said the sound of the second thing was much more quiet.

Just a side note I found it interesting.

I really like the rifle, I think it will get quite a bit of use.

I just picked up my second 99 last night... a .30-30 TD model. I'm not sure the exact manufacture date, I haven't had time to dig for it, but it's likely a pre-WWII 99B, if I'm looking at it right. I'm pretty excited about it... and, yes, they are good shooters.

Mine will likely only see cast bullets, a 173grn cast bullet over a charge of IMR4198 or IMR3031 is a soft shooting, generally accurate round in my .308 99, and likely the same in my new .30-30.

I have been on the hunt for a "reasonable" 99 in 22HP....found a NICE one for a tick under $2k and let it go, and have not seen even a nice one again....they are just not common in MO...so hunting "good" auction sites is the way for me.

I had also wanted a 243 bolt gun for a while now.....really wanting to try to see just how long I could get that round to go, so had been looking at Tikka, Howa and the like, then this thing came up for a good price and grabbed it...has some very odd finish...."wear"....i guess I will say on the stock, looking for a good "wood" guy in my area. But we will likely see how far I can make an old 99 go with the 243.

I am always one to buck current trends....I hate trendy s---. So in light of that I see the 243 as a good anti 6.Xmm current flavor of the month....and lets see if old dogs can still run with the new kids on the block.

Not sure if the 99 is the best platform (bet not) for this kind of testing....but in the 20 rounds off hand a week or so ago....well...if this guy with a blown left arm can shoot this heavy girl that well....there is untapped potential there.
