How does the savage axis shoot? Is it on par with stevens 200? I was looking at getting stevens, but local walmart got axis in 308 for $267. That seems to be a great deal, new rifle for under $270. I understand that it's cheap rifle, but about two years back I got a stevens in 223 and it turned out to be a great shooter. Is axis as good of a rifle as stevens 200? is it same action?

The Axis shoots great. I have sold a bunch of them, and shot several. The trigger pull is a bit on the heavy side, but I have seen a .308, and a .243 both fire sub-moa groups out of the box with the first factory ammo tried. It is a different action than the Stevens 200/Savage 10. Both short and long cartridges are built on the same length action.

My Axis in 223 is accuate, heavy trigger tho. Came with a 3x9 Bushnell. Seems i paid to much at $390. including shipping , tax, paper work.

Just did a bit of research, I'm going get the stevens, recoil lug and trigger on axis seems to be a big no go for me. With stevens I was planing on getting timney trigger right of the bat, looks like the axis uses different trigger system. What’s up with that wimpy little nub that passes for a recoil lug? Would it sand up to 5000 rounds of 308? I might get the axis just for a truck gun; I just can’t get over how cheap the thing is. Heck I see mosin m44s go for $250, axis would make a better truck gun then mosin I would think.

most recomend the stevens if you can find one, triggers from timney and rifle basix for the axis are available many just mod the stock trigger think both guns should be accurate but you dont really have any different stock options for the axis as of yet that I know of.

I don't think the Axis was intended for guy who are throwing 5000 rds of lead downfield at a target. I think the Axis is for a lower budget hunter. From what I have read it is a great shooter. I just did a little math and if you were buying 200 rds at a time and buying cheap, you would be spending right around $3100 on ammo. I would save a little bit more and buy a higher grade rifle. Not to say there is anything wrong with the Axis.

The Axis is inexpensive and can shoot but in the end lacks a good trigger and aftermarket support you could easily have with the Stevens or Savage 10/110 action.

don't know on the savage axis line, a friend who love savages was a bit skeptical about them. Have you looked at the Marlin x7 rifles? They are also right at that price point.good luck.

Personally, I would stay away from Marlin that are being built currently. I know that the rimfires have taken a huge quality hit. Not sure I have read much about the X7s though.

i kmow the marlins are really being bashed for their rimfires and lever actions. one thing a stevens does offer that the other budget rifles dont is it is the savage 110 a time proven action. alot of 110s have put meat on the table. also if you want to dress it up over time the stevens 200 has a done of add ons barrells, stocks and triggers. the other budget rifles are basically what they are

Chad I would reload for it plus cast my own too, so probably would run up on 5k rounds in five or so years. I'd love to get it to shoot 200 gr lead bullet at about 2100fps. That would make a great truck/brush/range rifle. Too bad our walmart doesnt have Stevens at that price, I'd get one for sure.
Thank for your help, I got some thinking to do.
