Ive had both the M77 and the M700, and greatly preferred the Ruger.
Holy smokes!my dads wife's uncle that lives up close to the canadian border has the biggest 99 collection i ever seen, last i seen he was up to over 750 99s. i would like to ask if i could buy one when i get the spare cash.
ya that's what happens when you buy every 99 you see and have to money for it. the 700 is a target rifle,i am giving my neighbor a deal on it, the funds will pay for the m77 in 280 cdnn has for $469, and have money for at least a burris ff2 or a vx-freedom. i could get a new model 70 tho id have to save for a scope.Holy smokes!
Even if Id bought every 99 Ive ever seen Id still only be up to 50 or so!ya that's what happens when you buy every 99 you see and have to money for it. the 700 is a target rifle,i am giving my neighbor a deal on it, the funds will pay for the m77 in 280 cdnn has for $469, and have money for at least a burris ff2 or a vx-freedom. i could get a new model 70 tho id have to save for a scope.
he's in his 80s, he was a carpenter and probably did jobs for 99's before.Even if Id bought every 99 Ive ever seen Id still only be up to 50 or so!
I will say, if you are only going to collect one model of gun, the 99 is a good one- what with the long production run, different stocks, barrels, chamberings and optional features.he's in his 80s, he was a carpenter and probably did jobs for 99's before.
ya he's got at least 3 i seen, he has a match pair made for theodore roosevelt..I will say, if you are only going to collect one model of gun, the 99 is a good one- what with the long production run, different stocks, barrels, chamberings and optional features.
It is probably possible to have over 700 with no two identical!
Wonder if he has the Holy Grail- the Montreal Home Guard Musket

they still have problems, like i said they would have to redesign the hole mag.How did we get to the Savage Model 99, when I started this I was inquiring about the Savage Axis II magazine, I'm still wondering if there is a fix for that plastic clip that holds the magazine in the receiver? Incidentally I've reposted this in the repair section of this forum.
ill go look at the one ive got and see if i can figure something out.How did we get to the Savage Model 99, when I started this I was inquiring about the Savage Axis II magazine, I'm still wondering if there is a fix for that plastic clip that holds the magazine in the receiver? Sorry about the thread jack, Loose. How did we get to the Savage Model 99, when I started this I was inquiring about the Savage Axis II magazine, I'm still wondering if there is a fix for that plastic clip that holds the magazine in the receiver? thats sorta what i was thinking about doing, tho as you say it dosent fix the underlying issue of that small chunk of plastic breaking.Sorry about the thread jack, Loose.
I saw one fella post on Facebook a couple years ago where he had affixed a thin slice of spring steel to the underside of the clip. This did seem like a decent field fix for the self-ejection issue, but I dont know if it really offered any long term durability improvement.
If only you could top load the Axis, ARRRRRRGH! You could just screw the mag in place and forget about it.....thats sorta what i was thinking about doing, tho as you say it dosent fix the underlying issue of that small chunk of plastic breaking.
One buddy of mine just tapes his mag in at the begining of the day, works for him but he ever only fire one or two shots.
the other problem they have is, they brake where the base plate meets the mag body. mine i ground some and epoxied it.thats sorta what i was thinking about doing, tho as you say it dosent fix the underlying issue of that small chunk of plastic breaking.

ya they should just have made it a internal box mag like a rem ADL,If only you could top load the Axis, ARRRRRRGH! You could just screw the mag in place and forget about it.....
But, on the .223 at least, the rounds have to be inserted into the feed lips from the front of the magazine, rim first, making it impossible- even if the ejection port wasnt so small.
I wonder if it would be possible to adapt one of the Howa detachable mags.....?
They make a complete kit for the 1500 that includes a polymer magwell insert.
Or even the Savage M10/110.....ya they should just have made it a internal box mag like a rem ADL,
ill check, my Ram uses the same latch as the rotarysIt looks like it might be possible to cut the front off a Ruger American mag (vertically) and affix (epoxy) it to the front of the Axis magazine, the latch appears to be approximately the same size.

Ive got the Weatherby Vanguard, just a rebadged Howa 1500, and it is my most accurate bolt action rifle. My .243 Savage 99 takes the overall accuracy cake. It is a laser!Earlier the Howa 1500 was brought up and it is one of my favorite rifles, I have 2 chambered in 30-06 and they have never given any trouble and shoot very good, I compare them accuracy wise to my 700bdl just the plastic stock doesn't compare to the wood.
I've seen them recently on sale for very competitive prices.
