I've been told that if I get a Savage "I" can swap barrels quite easily. I need to get the tool to remove the barrel nut and the head spaceing is done on a spent case. Is this as simple as it has been explaned? If so has anyone got any tips on the proceedure? I'm going to get a 12.... in 308 to start and then get another barrel for 243 that I love to go varminting with.

Any advise would be appreciated...

cm...

Yes, it's that simple. It takes less than 15 minutes to swap a barrel.

But, if you use a case to headspace the rifle, you will use a full length sized case. I prefer using headspace gauges. I have a set of Forster gauges for .308 (which is also the same used for .243 and .260).

You will need a good bench vise and barrel blocks. I just took a piece of 2x4, drilled a 1" hole in it and sawed it in half. I recommend using a piece of leather (I used a damp piece of chamois) to wrap the part of the barrel going into the wood blocks. This gives it more grip so the barrel doesn't slip. If you have resin, that works too.

yep and once you've done it several times, it can be done in 5... I have a model 10 action and shoot 4 calibers with it.

And here's a hint... the barrel nut doesn't have to be he-man tight 25-30 ft. lbs. is plenty. makes it much easier the second time around. also, money well spent is on the aftermarket barrel lug... the Savage factory types are stamped steel and are usually NOT flat all the way across the back so your lug cannot sit perfectly flush up against the stock recess.. SSS is a good source of parts and accessories for your rifle. I just wish they were better at answering the damn phone....

give em a little leeway, last i checked they're essentially a two person shop Fred Moreo and his wife (who's name escapes me at the moment, Lisa?? ) and to be quite honest if fred's in the shop alone he's a little slow to answer the phone at times (being more focused on doing the work at hand). they've always answered my E-mails within a day ro two, which is more than i can say for a number of other much more well known gun related service shops with much higher staffing numbers.

yeah, but he hasn't returned my email in SEVERAL days.. comes a time maybe he needs to hire some help.

Many times a missed phone call will cost you a sale.. I sure don't let it happen in my business.

I'm very happy for him that his business has really grown, but you always need to keep in mind what got you there and Fred's customer service was it... His workmanship and prices are good, but it's not any better than what you can get elsewhere. The personal service is what got me "staying with him". perhaps he feels he's "outgrown" the need for that... it'd be a shame.

I realize many of his parts (triggers/stocks etc.) are actually made by subcontractors.
