How hard is it to change a savage barrel? Can the average person with good mechanical skills do it? Is this a job for a gunsmith? I would like to build a 250 and a 300 savage bolt rifle. I was thinking about using the 11 action. is there a better choice? I would like to use a savage action, but I'm not completely opposed to a Remington action, and barrel. Any suggestions would be a great help.

Fairly simple and straightforward. 1. lock in vise 2. use savage barrel nut wrench to back off barell nut. 3. unscrew barell 4. screw in new barell 5. turn in untill it contacts a nogo gauge.+ 1/16 turn 6. tighten nut 7. if the nut is tight, the go gauge chambers and the nogo doesn't youre good. the bolt heads and barells are easy to change and midwayusa.com has a decent selection of the parts, and tools to do it.

thank you

I had thought that savage barrels were fairly easy, that is why I wanted to use the savage action for my fist " custom " project. Thanks for the step by step.

A friend and I just screwed our replacement barrels in firmly against a Go gauge and tightened the barrel nut, which the instructions on the Savage board say will give about a thousandth and a half over minimum headspace. They call for no monkeying around with a No-go gauge and 1/16th turn.
Must have worked, the guns are tight on brass fireformed in the stock barrel and neck sized, but not so much that I could not shoot what I had on hand and full length size for normal use.

The factory tightens those nuts hard. It took an action wrench, a barrel vise, and a hammer on the nut wrench to loosen it. We did not screw it back nearly as hard; hand tight plus a couple of light raps.
