Savage Combination Rifle Shotgun

I guess over the years, I've had five different models of Savage combo guns. In fact, when I was a small kid, my dad had one and it's what sparked my interest in combo guns!

The problem is, they rarely shoot both bbls to the same point of aim, in other words, they are poorly regulated and it's a huge deal for me. Some are better than others, but I wasn't satisfied with any of mine EXCEPT my Savage 2400.

The 2400's were made by Valmet in Finland and you can easily regulate the bbls to whatever loads you are shooting. The system works great, and I also like the fact the 2400's are hammerless, you don't have to cock the hammer for each shot.

I have a different model in .22 mag / 20 gauge and it is a lot of fun. I use it as a varmint gun / plinker around the property, and sometimes bring it when i take my son small game hunting.

I’ve always liked this concept, so I likely have rose colored glasses when it comes to them. (My grandfather and a good friend of mine each had one while I was a young and impressionable teenager, and I picked one up some years later)

I’ve not had an issue with the regulation of the barrels, but I’ve got it sighted for the rimfire, and don’t do anything too exacting with the 20 gauge.

We put a stock pouch on it. It holds a small Altoid container filled with .22 mag shells, a fire steel, a small knife, and a flashlight. I can’t imagine we’d ever need it, but my son and i thought it would be neat to put the essential things you might want for a walk in the woods in it (just realized we never got around to getting a compass for it).

I have vague plans to refinish the stock and Dura Coat the metal.

.410 ammo seems to be sporadically available now.

I have several, they are my go to gun if I don’t know what I might need one for, as they are quite versatile.

Keep one on the mule for the same reason.

In good shape, in desirable chamberings, they bring quite a bit of money but that seems to happen to anything that’s no longer made.

They seem to be hit or miss as far as regulation, That one above is the only one I have that shoots slugs right where the .22’s also go. I guess it doesn’t matter that much if you never run slugs but that reduces versatility a bit.

When they were made and approximate value?
Don't know for sure, but my folks gave me one just like that one for my 14th birthday (or thereabouts), and my next birthday will be my 75th.;)
I don't know whatever became of that gun, but probably 30 years later, I bought one similar to it at a gunshow - only it has a synthetic stock with a 20ga on the bottom and a .22LR on the top. Our youngest daughter has that one, and I'm pretty sure it's the only gun she has.

I had a 24D in .223/20ga for a couple decades. I bought it used and had the factory replace the barrels, after which I never had any problems with it -- the .223 barrel was surprisingly accurate. A .22WMR version might make a peachy turkey hunting rig.

I finally sold it off mine because my interests changed and I just didn't shoot it that often, but they seem like solid guns.

They've been made in different variations forever, not sure on value.
They're great guns for wandering in the woods when you're not really hunting lol.
I wanted one and really didn't care if it was LR or mag over 410 or 20. Really think I lucked out finding a 22 mag over 20g as IMHO it's the most versatile you get the extra power of the 22 mag and being a single shot it won't break the bank and 20g is much better all around and usually cheaper.

I’ve had just about every iteration except the Valmet made ones. Down to two now, a 24DL in 22/20 and a 24V in 222/20.
The DL is older and has full length brazed barrels. Very accurate. The V has the separated barrels and the rifle is great for one or two shots and then walks unless you let it cool.
Prices are way out of the realm of reasonable but if people pay it I guess I’m wrong.
I’ve recently seen Ds at $500-600 and Vs higher.
I still want a 22 WMR/20

They certainly do look cool. and it would be handy if you were out for small game

This is by far the best Savage combo gun that said Savage on it,

The 2400 is full of improvements over the other models.

500 is going market value for the average 22-410. Add a small premium for 22mag.

No serial number puts it prior to 1968 i believe.

Mine is a Stevens branded model 22-410, pre mid 50s. It has the original Tenite plastic furniture in perfect shape. It also shoots POA on both barrels. It is the definition of patina, and has only had one repair to the selector switch. My pops bought it 40 some years ago for 20 bucks.

I have guns that shoot faster, with more powerful rounds, and that cost 10 times as much but the 22-410 is the last gun i would ever sell. I would love one with a centerfire 22 over 20 gauge.

I have a couple of them, a 24V in .223 over 20ga, and a "campers Companion" in .22 over 20ga. They are fun guns, I don't use them much, but they could be what saves your life in a severe situation!

I have had a couple 24s, my favorite an E/DL in .22mag/20 gauge. Great squirrel getter. Parted with it some years back, miss it occasionally.

My father came acrost on in the 50s an e/dl 22/20g it has been a great gun many memories of using it when we nuisance trapped i used it to dispatch anima

The Savage 2400 morphed into the Valmet 412,

which had many improvements over the 2400's. Also, the 412's offered 26 different bbl. that could easily be put on the action. 12's, 20's in different lengths, and a bunch of different CF rifle calibers were offered, in both combo's and DR bbl. sets.

I have one of these in 22WMR over 20Ga. I rarely use the shotgun barrel, but I have an inexpensive scope on it and the .22mag barrel shoots to the point of aim of the scope.
