I am thinking about getting a Savage FV-SR .22LR and suppressing it with an AAC Element 2. Does anyone have experience with the Savage FV-SR .22LR? It seems like an awesome value at $250 plus the current $25 Savage rebate going on now. Additionally, what scope recommendations do you have? I will mainly be using it for a fun gun as well as varmints (groundhogs up to possibly coyotes).

Do you have any other recommendations? Also, does anyone have suggestions for makes and retailers of .22 subsonic ammo? Thanks.

any of the standard velocity rounds like cci standard velocity should stay subsonic.

check out the savage forum at rimfire central. They can and will tell you everything you ever wanted to know. This guy just got one and took it to the range. http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=654497 3 rounds cloverleafed at 50 yds.

I personally got the cz455 suppressor model and have a deadair mask due any day now. I'm excited. Topped it with mueller APV and warne rings.

Iff'n it was me:

1. Use CCI Standard Velocity as your "go to" round if you want to avoid the supersonic crack. It's subsonic, and has enough power to cycle every semi-auto I've tried it in. It seems to be the standard in the silencer community (at least in my neck of the woods).

2. Maybe you can find them in your area (I've yet to see any in the wild), but the Federal Suppressor 22 ammo goes CCI Standard Velocity one better by coming in a copper plated round. The copper plating helps keep your silencer cleaner.

3. If you don't mind the supersonic crack, go with any speed in a copper plated round in order to keep your silencer cleaner. I have no particular favorite, but I do prefer Federal and don't bother with Remington.

4. If you're going to shoot thru a pistol, stick with the supersonic, copper plated rounds. Cleaner due to the copper plating, and you will lose enough velocity thru a shorter barrel that those supersonic rounds will be subsonic.

Bottom line...I use CCI Standard Velocity thru my rifles only for times when I want the ultimate quiet.
Any other time, I'm using a copper plated round - may be supersonic out of my rifle (but I'm at the range, etc.) and is not supersonic thru a short barrel as a pistol.

It's usually easier / cheaper to find supersonic copper plated rounds than it is CCI Standard Velocity.

And finally, don't overpay!

The 22 shortage is over, although prices are still on the high side and there are certain regions that apparently haven't caught up.

At my local shop, bricks of CCI Standard Velocity run $29.99, $36.99, $39.99, depending on what supplier he gets them from.

He has tons of other stuff cheaper (those supersonic, plated rounds).

awww, I'm envious. Shortage is not over in my region. It is rare to find any box greater than 300 rounds, and if you do, it's about $10 per hundred. CCI's are $50 a brick, if you can find them. :(

FvSR is a good rifle. Both my brother and I have one. Both of us have had magazine issues. It is a savage mk2 issue though. Savage generally will send new mags if you need them!

I have a little red dot on mine right now for pest duty and I am very happy with it. I have also had it out to about as far as you can hit with a 22 lr and it did very well. No complaints other than the magazine seating issue.

There is a subsonic segmented hollow point that I really like. It is copper coated and quiet. AND should work well on game.

Good value. Looks cool with a 50mm scope. However, it isn't as accurate as my Marlins. For the effective range of the round, it'll do - esp with a can.

I love my FVSR after I threw away the cheap stock and put on a Boyd's hunter. I put a Burris timberline 4.5-14. It is an accurate rifle at least for my needs.

I have one and love it. I use it as a host for my Spectre II. It is plenty accurate and I love the trigger. I currently have a Nikon Pro-Staff on mine. I got the scope for a smoking deal through an online black friday sale.

I'm underwhelmed with my FV-SR's accuracy. Not nearly as accurate as a CZ452, nor any type of sooped up 10-22 (i.e. a 10-22 with a bull barrel and decent trigger), nor even a Marlin 60 or 785. I need to work on it, but so far, haven't found the right ammo/scope combination for the FV-SR.

As far as ammo, I've not been dissatisfied with Remington Subsonic, although I won't use any other Remington 22LR, and Wolf Match was always good if you can find it. One of my local shops often carries Gemtech Subsonic, which is made by CCI and is pretty accurate too.

I had a FV-SR for a while and found it to be an incredibly accurate gun. However, the biggest point of concern is the cheap, flimsy factory stock. You'll get barrel contact at various points throughout the barrel channel and the comb of the stock was way too low to get a good check weld for use with a scope. The action was gritty and the accu-trigger would not go as light as I wanted. So I ended up ordering a Boyd's stock, which means you also have to order bottom metal because the trigger guard is molded into the factory stock, and also ordered an Apachee trigger kit. After it was all said and done, I had a gun that was just as accurate as a CZ 455/452 except that it cost more money and more time. I ended up selling it and buying a CZ.

I like mine. I've had it for about 4 years now. It wears a Nikon ProStaff Rimfire, a Boyd's TH stock and an AAC Pilot II. The size and accuracy is what I love about it, plus it's always fun to hear the bullet strike and not the muzzle report.

The only negative I have to say has to do with extraction issues. Every once and a while it won't take the spent casing out and it'll be to pry out with a pocket knife.

I think my next rimfire will be a CZ but I'm not getting rid of this one.

Does CZ offer a threaded bull barrel 452/453/455 model? I have the CZ-452 Varmint in .17HMR and it's an awesome rifle.

Well I just picked up my 2nd FV-SR.

$249.99 + $2 VA BG check + $13.36 Tax = $265.35 - $25 Savage rebate - $25 CC company rebate = $215.35 total - not too shabby!

I'm undecided exactly what to do - my old one has the Boyd's Pro Varmint (formerly Tacticool) stock in black paint finish - think I'm going to take my Nikon Scope off it and whenever the ATN X-Sight II HD shows up, mount it on the old one to make that my night varmint gun (all black).

Thinking about trying out another Boyd's Pro Varmint stock on the new one, but this time in a laminate finish - maybe Black Pepper, but it seems Black Pepper stocks are the luck of the draw. I've seen way too many pictures where there was too much white in the stock for me - I'd like to have a lot of black with white highlights in the laminate.

I'm also thinking about getting the new adjustable comb - that knocks the price of the stock up to $204 plus the price of the hardware (trigger guard, floor plate, longer screw set). Will have as much in the stock as the gun!

Anywho...I may give Boyd's a call to see if they can hand pick a pepper laminate stock with a lot of black before ordering?

To the OP - if you're in the market for a bipod, I'm currently using the Blackhawk Sportster TraverseTrack Bipod 6” - 9" (71BP09BK) for all my Savage rifles.

Blur, let me know what Boyds says about hand picking. I want a pepper laminate pro varmint for my cz, but like you, I want a dark one. I'd get a black one, but I plan on reshaping it some and would rather refinish than repaint

Will do - I plan on calling (and maybe follow up with an e-mail) this week, but I'm not expecting much. Probably just get a stock answer (ya takes yur chances?).

I've been Googling for pix of Boyd's black pepper stocks and it seems 90% of them have way too much white in them for me.

For some reason, the thumbhole stocks seem to look better than the Pro Varmint in black pepper, but I don't want a thumbhole stock on this particular gun (already have two of them on other Savages).

Just got off the phone with Boyd's - you can forget about them hand picking a stock in order to get one with mostly black ("they just grab one off the shelf and that's what they use").

Pretty much what I figured - now I have to decide what I want to do?

I may just get another black painted Varmint Hunter (formerly Tacticool) stock.
Don't know if I'll pay the extra for the adjustable comb or not.

Not too happy about it, but waddya gonna do?

Anybody know of someone else making stocks for the FV-SR?

nobody in the same league/price point as boyds. you might try macon or stockys.
Stocky's has nothing but a thumbhole stock for the FV-SR, and I'm happy with the two I have from Boyd's.

Just did a quick pass at Macon's - looks like nothing listed for the FV-SR.
