Savage Hog Hunter .308 (NEW PICS 5-20)

Got my new Savage Hog Hunter today in .308 Its pretty sweet but the stock feels cheap as any plastic savage stock.....as expected. The barrel is very much free floated though and the threaded barrel and the accu-trigger are nice. I'll shoot it soon and give a report

Anyone else have one of these yet?

Not a big deal at all. Just a nice package for not alot of $$$. Med/hvy barrel, threaded, large bolt knob, right around $400. \

We dont even have hogs in MI.
And where we do, SW, you cant shoot centerfires
.
Just thought it was a cool gun. Ill be using it for deer/target
 
I love Savage rifles, but cant see the big deal about this one, I got lots of rifles I call hog rifles, all different calibers, actions etc.

How many of your hog rifles are suppressor ready from the factory?

Looks like Savage is just answering to what people are wanting again. It's a marketing thing. A no nonsense economical rifle with short iron sighted barrel to get in and out of tight quarters with and the medium heavy contour barrel comes threaded for a suppressor, something that is getting more and more popular everyday. Especially here in Texas where suppressors come September will be legal for any game animal.
 
I've been liking Savage rifles for a long time now, but I'd be more interested in this one if it'd been wood stocked and left handed. Other than that, it seems like a nice train of thought.
 
I own several Savages (my personal favs) but not this one. Guess that's gonna have to change. Been wanting to get into the can scene lately but sadly no threaded barrels ..... here's my excuse
 
again I say I have no use for a rifle like this, maybe someone that wants this specific animal or only has one or 2 rifles to choose from, as for me, just dont make sense, dont need it, want it or see a reason to buy it. as far a supressors a got a few AR`10s to work with. anyway, I kill hogs everyday when I check cattle, got way too many hogs to worry about supressors, so many hogs, so little time.
 
I like the looks and the concept of this rifle but the suppressor would be useless to me since they are illegal to hunt with in my state.
 
They have potential, I like the 20" barrrel with irons, but WHY put a heavy target barrel on the thing. Way too heavy for the intended purpose, I'll pass.
 
That is almost a perfect platform for jump shooting hogs in heavy cover. The only thing that would make it better is a set of large Ghost ring aperture sights. I'd also have mine in 9.3x62 if I was back on my place shooting hundreds of hogs a year at close range in thick cover.

There is no better turn bolt configuration than this type of set up for that kind of hog hunting.
 
the perfect rifle for hogs in heavy cover ( and I know from experience) Springfield Armory Scout Squad. I deal them major damage when I find them and believe me I got thousands of them. one of my AR10 does good too.

M1A Squad Scout would be a pretty tough choice to beat for volume hog hunting no doubt.(Also speaking from personal experience) So is a .45-70 lever gun with large aperture ghost rings, as is a pump action shot gun with slugs and so is a double rifle for quick short range range action. Of course none of them are going to have the rate of fire as that M1.

I just don't like carrying an M1 they've always felt clumsy to me.

I had setup gun genie from Gallery of Guns to Email me when it was in. Sold out the 8 Davidson's had in 20min. Amazing how you can order a gun on your cell phone and have it the next day from Arizona to Michigan

Suppressors are legal in MI now for only a few months now. This is what prompted my buy mainly. No hogs to shoot here......thats a good thing though I hear

Craigman, dont hate your new gun, just that lately there have been rifles like the Ruger Gunsite that really are just another fad type gun. if a person wants a particular type rifle, get it, I stick to common caliber bolt actions and AR type rifles. at 58 years old, I aint gonna stray from my proven arms. hope you enjoy it, I shoot hogs everyday I check cattle so whatever rifle looks good when I open my safe is what I load in my pickup.

My family has a helicopter business and one of the services is hog erradication. I can tell you from experience that an AR rifle shooting 223's will be very hard to beat when it comes to killing feral swine. Cheap to operate, easy to keep running, simple to feed with low cost ammo. low recoiling, optics ready and effective ballistics. With this high volume shooting, ammo cost and recoil are the biggest factors that come to mind. In some areas/geographics and instances, 12ga with buckshot is effective but due to cost and increased recoil it isnt used much.

We can kill more hogs in a single day with the deminutive .223 than a ranch hand will driving around in a pickup checking cows in a year. Folks with serious hog problems use serious equipment and tactics, though it is what some would call pricey.

Meanwhile, back to the program...... nice looking rifle!!
Again Savage is pretty savy these days. They seem to offer what folks are wanting. The "hog" hunting theme has gotten quite popular recently along with more and more states and people geting educated and becoming suppressor friendly. The "hoghunter" is a nice simple platform and it's a win win for everybody.

the lineup for the helicopter gunner job must be like trying to get a bouncer job at a strip club. LOL Need any help?
 
I spent a few months as a door gunner on a Huey, usually M60, only couple times around a General Electric mini gun, I bet that would deal hogs some misery.
 
dont know much at all about LaRue other than being made in my part of Texas and seem to have a good reputation. all of my AR10s are Armalite with the exception of a Bushmaster BAR10. I stick to the A2 configuration, leave my M1As in .308 for long distance shooting, my AR10s are for close in if I ever need em. like i said I hear nothing but good about LaRue.
 
A bolt .308 with factory irons!!! Hope they put out a southpaw version, but may hav eto bite even if they don't.
 
I've been thinking about picking one of those up for deer hunting in AR, since I found out I could use a can on game animals. Looks like a nice setup and no extra cost for threading.

So when are you going to get that can man!
