I have a Savage Mk 1 SVT (in .22), which came as a single-shot. It's the one with the ugly plastic stock and the Williams front & rear aperture sights.

On the underside where the magazine well would be, there's a blank cover plate which has a spacer block to fill up the mag well that's molded in.

Seems to me that it could very easily be converted to a repeater by replacing the blank cover/spacer with a mag well assembly. As near as I can figure, this would convert the gun to a Mk 2. I'd like to do this if that's all there is to it.

Am I overlooking anything? Would I be violating any law by changing the capacity? (Is the shot capacity associated with the serial number?)

And, if it seems okay, where would I find the needed parts?

Thanks.

In addition to the mag well assembly, you'd need the magazine retention spring and possibly a few other odds and ends. Check this link, page 16:

I would try calling Savage for the parts. Their online store link doesn't seem to work, but you can call customer service and order parts.

I am not a lawyer, but I'm fairly certain you would not be violating any law by changing the capacity of a bolt-action rifle. In any case, converting from single-shot to magazine-fed doesn't technically change the capacity: With a detachable magazine, capacity is a function of the magazine, not of the rifle.

Thanks very much, Toivo. I've downloaded the manual and I'll be looking into this.

BTW, I screwed up--the proper designation of this rifle is FVT, not SVT.

You're welcome. As far as I know, the only difference between the FVT models and other MK I/II rifles is the target sights.
